The Mountain King is a legendary figure from Bordermen mythology, and a folktale king popularly told in children's stories.
According to some stories, the Mountain King was a borderman warlord who claimed Red Mountain and the Vyrsts as his kingdom. Eventually, he became so bold in his rule that he challenged the Grey God Barran the Exalted himself and proclaimed himself immortal. For years, the Mountain King used his wits and cleverness to trick Barran into granting him immortal life. But Barran, clever himself, knew that as long as the Mountain King remained sane, he could not be defeated. Eventually, Barran cursed the Mountain King into turning him mad. This led to an insane Mountain King allowing Barran to crash down on his hall with thunder and lightning and soon enough, the King died and his castle was destroyed.
The Mountain King's tale is sung by minstrels in the popular song Hall of the Mountain King.
