"In the last few years, the Black Company appeared out of thin air and took the seas. Whenever men see the banner, black as the dragon flying above it, they pray."
―Tyrion

The Black Company is the merchant fleet / pirate fleet for hire of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled princess of Westeros, who founded it in her exile.

Originally starting with just the dromond, used by her brother so send her into exile and keep her safe there, Daenerys began gathering more ships under her black banner. All this began, when she managed to hatch a dragon egg, thought to have been but a fake stone. With the dragon, she began amassing power and extorted Tyrosh, the city where she was exiled in, for protection against their enemies.

Soon after, she amassed vast influence and power, joining many other sellsail fleets to her own, eventually gathering a thousand ships under her banner and becoming the undisputed mistress of the Narrow and Summer seas.

By 313 AC, the Black Company essentially rules the seas around Westeros and the Free Cities, most of which pay them tribute in exchange for protection.
