House Targaryen, Valyrian Freehold and the origins of the empire[]
House Targaryen is a noble family of Valyrian descent. The family was one of the few forty dragonlords who ruled the Valyrian Freehold, a great territory that spanned much of the continent of Essos, but has since fallen to ruin, approximately one hundred years before Aegon's Conquest, when it was brought down by a cataclysmic event known as the Doom of Valyria. The Targaryens have a specific trait of premonition-like dreams and moved to Dragonstone, an island in Westeros, subsequently after Daenys Targaryen´s, also known as Daenys the Dreamer, visions of a catalytic event that would be the downfall of Valyria. Twelve years later the Doom descended on the city of Valyria, leading to the collapse of the Freehold. The Targaryens were the only dragonriders of Valyria to survive the doom.

Aegon I Targaryen, Lord of Dragonstone, aspired to unite all of Westeros under one rule and began his conquest in 2 BC. With the aid of his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, Aegon ended his conquest with a crown atop his head and a throne for his descendants to rule. The Targaryens would be the undisputed rulers of the continent for 300 years before being deposed by usurper King Robert I Baratheon, in a rebellion that would led to the near extinction of the dragon house. Daenerys I Targaryen, a daughter of King Aerys II, managed to survive the Targaryen massacre that occured during Robert´s Rebellion by escaping to Essos with her brother Viserys. With the greatest army amassed in history and three dragons on her side, Daenerys came back to Westeros to take back what is hers by ¨fire and blood.¨, leading to the restoration of House Targaryen on the Iron Throne and the vanquish of The Others during the Great War.
Valyria has always been a subject of fascination and fantasy for the Targaryen royals. With their power and influence secured in all of Westeros due to dragons, House Targaryen set their eyes focused on Essos and the dream of a contemporary Valyria.
