Nightdancer was a dragon born from one of the dragon Drogon's eggs in 313 AC. His egg was, as tradition dictates, placed in the crib of Prince Aeryn Targaryen, hatching shortly afterwards. Nightdancer was tamed by Prince Aeryn once he came of age. He was ridden by Prince Aeryn until the prince's death in 335 AC. Nightdancer then lived in the wild on Dragonstone for the next 62 years, until he was tamed by King Baelor II Targaryen, who then rode him until his death.
