"Well, you see...things get confused out there: power, ideals, the old morality, practical necessity. Because there's a conflict in every human heart, between the rational and the irrational, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. Sometimes the dark side overcomes the better angels of our nature. Every man has got a breaking point. You and I have one. Lucas Dragen has reached his. And very obviously, he has gone insane...He's out there operating without any decent restraint, totally beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct. And his methods have become...unsound."
Qyburn to Cersei Lannister

Lucas Dragen, also known as Lucas the Cannibal, the eponymous Lord of the Hunt, revered as the Red Dragon by the Brotherhood of Darkness, is a major character in the first, second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh seasons. Lucas was the eldest son of Garth Dragen and Alise Dragen of Snake Mount, brother of Erik, Domeric and Mira Dragen. He was married to Larinna Harrigon and is the father of two children, his son and heir Warron, and a newborn daughter Melina. He was the former Lord of Snake Mount and head of House Dragen. Lucas was mostly accompanied by the Butcher's Boys, childhood friends turned lackeys who assisted him in his atrocities.

Notorious for his habit of consuming his victims, Lucas was psychotic, cannibalistic, calculating, calm, cruel, intelligent, vicious and thoroughly enjoyed playing mind games with his victims. According to popular belief, Lucas was the reincarnated Vyrio Ahai or the Red Dragon.

Lucas Dragen is the anti-hero and later antagonist of LordOfTheNeverThere's fanfiction trilogy Demon of the North.

Biography[]

Before his birth[]

Red priestesses

The Red Priestesses of Asshai receive visions of Lucas' birth, life, and downfall.

Thousands of years before his birth, Lucas Dragen appeared as Vyrio Ahai, the brother of the legendary Azor Ahai, to the ancient Red Priests in a vision. The vision also included Lucas's father, Lord Garth Dragen, Lucas's paternal bastard uncle Ethan Snow, and Larinna Harrigon, Lucas's wife. Similarly, at an unknown period of time, the two former, alongside Lucas, simultaneously appeared in an Asshai'i prophecy as the "Three Catalysts"; The Lord of the Hunt (Lucas),[2] The Prince of the Moths (Ethan) and The Father of the Dead (Garth).[3]

Early life[]

File:YoungLucius.jpg

Lucas as a child.

Lucas Dragen was born in Snake Mount in 268 AL to Garth Dragen and his wife, Alise Dragen. As a young child, Lucas was joyful and kind-hearted. His primary interests were that of Westerosi history and nature. He shared a strong, affectionate bond with his twin-sister, Mira Dragen. During his childhood, he was tutored by Maester Vahaelor, whom Lucas considered to be a valuable and close friend.[4]

In his childhood, it was discovered that Lucas was very sensitive to other people's emotions, he could uncover how the person was feeling, if he/she was sad, angry, afraid, etc. This rare ability was nurtured by Vahaelor by giving Lucas daily tutoring on how to control and manipulate his own emotions and thoughts, and even those of others. Lucas was also taught the secrets of the "Memory Palace", a form of mnemonic discipline where one is able to store years worth of information through visualization. In order to successfully master these abilities, however, Lucas had to endure constant training which isolated him from his friends. Other children would often ridicule and shun him. Even his own sister, Mira, whom Lucas previously created a strong bond with, alienated him at one point.

At some point in his childhood, Lucas became infatuated with a girl called Kiyara. It is later revealed that Kiyara was one of Lucas' first lovers and the mother of his oldest child and bastard; Lucion Black.[5]

Lord of the Hunt[]

Attack in the Wolfswood[]

At the height of the War of the Usurper, his father, Garth Dragen, left Snake Mount and joined Lord Eddard Stark to fight against the Targaryens, leaving Lucas and the rest of his family behind. One day, Snake Mount's Master-at-Arms, Ser Cerran Harlaw, took the young Lucas Dragen into the Wolfswood to go hunting, claiming that Lucas needed to learn how to be a man. During their hunt, Lucas and Cerran managed to kill a deer calf, but accidentally surprised and disturbed two large stags, apparently the calf's parents. One stag attacked Ser Cerran and killed him, just before Cerran cut the beast in the neck, killing it in the process. The second stag charged at Lucas, picked him up, impaled and lacerated his flesh, severely wounding him, and forced him to the ground.

Despite his injuries, Lucas regained consciousness, but found himself abandoned, without weapons or equipment. He had festering wounds, a broken leg, and deep cuts on his back that exposed his bare ribs as a result from being virtually impaled by the stag's antlers. Lucas lay mutilated and alone, more than 200 miles (320 km) from Snake Mount. Lucas set the bone of his own leg, wrapped himself in the bear hide Ser Cerran was wearing, and began crawling back to Snake Mount. To prevent gangrene, Lucas allowed maggots to eat the dead, infected flesh in his wounds.

Cannibalistic origins[]

Lucius Journey

A map showing the route Lucas took to Snake Mount.

Using the stars as a navigational landmark, Lucas crawled overland east toward the Long Lake, where he fashioned a crude raft and floated downstream near Winterfell. The journey took him six weeks. He survived mostly on wild berries and roots. On one occasion, he had an encounter with a bow hunter who was dining on a freshly killed rabbit. Being completely starved out and mentally deteriorated, Lucas, at first, kindly asked the hunter to give him a piece of the rabbit food. When Lucas was refused, he took on a more aggressive tone and demanded that the hunter gave him the food, as if it was his birthright. Feeling intimidated, the hunter took out his knife and threatened to kill Lucas. Overwhelmed with anger, Lucas jumped the hunter and in a frenzied, almost animalistic state, bit him in the leg and took his knife. He continuously and repeatedly mauled and slashed at the hunter. He cut the hunter into several smaller pieces and he roasted and ate them, leaving his decapitated head for the crows. It was on this occasion that his appetite for human flesh originated, as he described that the taste of human flesh made him feel more "alive and whole". He would later use the hunter's redundant animal meat to drive away predatory animals.

The Hunt begins[]

Young Lucas in the Northern wilderness.

Manwell, a poacher and a sadistic rapist, found the bow hunter's head near his destroyed camp. Furious, he and his hunting pack vowed to take revenge on the person who killed him. Apparently, the huntsman was a member of Manwell's hunters, and possibly a close friend. Manwell ordered his men to spread out and search for the culprit.

The hunters eventually discovered who and where the murderer was. Manwell and his men chased Lucas for four days straight. Lucas managed to wound two of the five huntsmen. One hunter, Mortin, had his kneecap broken and accidentally fell of a cliff to his death.

After Manwell ordered his men to spread out to find Lucas, he found a figure sitting beside a fire. Believing that it was Lucas, he shot the body and after taking a closer look, he noticed that he actually shot Mortin's deceased body. Lucas appeared behind Manwell and smacked his head with a log and kicked away his bow. Lucas chased Manwell into the woods and eventually tackled him beside the shores of the White Knife. In a bloody and violent fight, Lucas slashed Manwell's leg vein, making him unable to walk. Lucas was planning to slit Manwell's throat but stopped after he noticed the chieftain Ferwyn and her Haragni at the other side of the river. Lucas pushed Manwell down the river in the hands of the Haragni where Ferwyn scalped and killed him. Ferwyn and her men eventually left without harming Lucas.

Even though Manwell was killed, Lucas still had to hide from his remaining hunters. While paddling on the White Knife downriver toward Winterfell, he noticed Manwell's men riding their horses at the Knife's shores. Startled and scared, Lucas jumped from his raft and swam towards the shore nearest to Winterfell. He sprinted to Winterfell hoping to divert the huntsmen. When he arrived at Winterfell's gates, he fell to the snow, completely exhausted. Rodrik Cassel picked Lucas up and brought him to Maester Luwin. When Manwell's men arrived at the gates, Rodrik took them captive.

Back in Snake Mount[]

After recovering from his wounds, Lucas stayed in Winterfell for a couple of days, while Maester Luwin treated his wounds. Catelyn Stark eventually had an escort arranged to bring Lucas safely back to Snake Mount.

Even though he returned to Snake Mount safely, Lucas was still severely traumatized by these events and was rendered temporarily mute. Witnessing Cerran Harlaw's gruesome death, the murder of the huntsman and the stag attack would haunt Lucas for the rest of his life; Lucas explains that it destroyed his faith in the gods, and thereafter he believed that there was no real justice in the world.[6]

Massacre of Orkmont and Greyjoy Rebellion[]

Lucas, at the age of 21, participated in the Greyjoy Rebellion, leading the forces of House Dragen beside his father. During which, he became famous for systematically hunting down key members of the rebellion, earning him the nickname "Lucas the Huntsman". During the rebellion, Lucas orchestrated the now infamous Orkmont Massacre, during which Lucas and his men massacred the inhabitants of the isle of Orkmont, an event which continues to haunt House Dragen to this day.

Lucas ordered the massacre of more than 300 ironborn. This caused Lucas to become stigmatized by House Stark, particularly by Eddard Stark. After the massacre, House Dragen continued to deny their involvement in the massacre, claiming that a rogue commander took matters in their own hands and orchestrated the slaughter.

After the war was over, House Stark and their vassals were invited at a victory banquet at a unknown castle in the North. There, Lucas met the son of the castle's lord: Garvy. Apparently, Garvy's father was a perverted nymphomaniac who attempted several sexual advances at Lucas. In retaliation, Lucas kidnapped Garvy, roasted him alive and fed him to his family. Afterwards, Garvy's family was never heard from again. Although most claim they traveled south to find fortune, some believe that they fled Lucas.

Start of the War of the Five Kings[]

Lucas and his father are seen in Winterfell accompanying King Robert's party. At the feast, Garth warns Lord Eddard about the Lannisters and their attempts to seize the Iron Throne. Ned, in turn, reminds Garth that he should keep a closer eye on Lucas as he has changed significantly since the events that occurred almost 17 years ago.

File:Lucas talks to robb.png

Lucas talks to Robb Stark.

Lucas converses with Robb Stark shortly after his brother and father left Winterfell. Lucas attempts to trouble Robb's mind about his family's departure, stating that Lord Eddard won't survive long in the capital. Robb seems not too worried about this and walks away. Lucas, however, is visibly pleased with Robb's apparent denial.

A few days later, Lucas is hunting a prisoner who recently tried to escape from the dungeons. Apparently, Lucas intentionally let the man loose to see how far he could run. After Lucas and his men chase the prisoner and eventually tackle him by throwing a rope around his neck, Lucas remarks that he is impressed by the hostage's skills but nonetheless, he kills him.

When back at the castle, Lucas converses with a representative from House Bracken. Apparently, several months prior, a member of the house known as Rickar Bracken mysteriously disappeared when Lucas personally invited him to Snake Mount. The representative states that his house is still suspicious towards Lucas and he even throws offensive and sarcastic remarks at him. Although Lucas remains his cool, his anger overflows and he sticks an icepick through his frontal lobes. The nobleman has trouble to contain his emotions and speech and blurs out random words while uncontrollably laughing. Mira Dragen, who is also present, removes the icepick, leading to his death. Lucas jokingly reminds her that technically, she killed him.

Lucius speaks to garth

Lucas is summoned by Garth Dragen.

After the Bracken lord was murdered, Garth Dragen summons Lucas, letting him know that he's aware of Bracken's death. Garth tells Lucas that he has to be more discreet or else House Dragen will have more enemies than friends. Lucas responds by stating that the Brackens no longer hold a threat and that Lucas personally went to Stone Hedge and spoke with Lord Jonos Bracken to "set things right". In truth, Lucas threatened to eat Lord Jonos's tongue if he sends more investigators. Lucas, supposedly, also may have brainwashed him as well. Garth remains unconvinced and sceptical and says that he'll be keeping a closer eye on him.

Mira Dragen visits the esteemed and veteran Maester Vahaelor. She claims to be afraid of Lucas and that she is concerned about Lucas's growing mental instability and his treacherous, unpredictable personality. Vahaelor claims that he is aware of Lucas's affliction and reassures Mira that she has nothing to be afraid for. Vahaelor also notes that Garth is watching him closely and that he will be alarmed if Lucas becomes more erratic.

Following the Bracken incident, Lucas was in danger of being imprisoned at Winterfell for his crimes against House Bracken. However, thanks to his clever wits and charismatic manipulations, he was able to avoid being jailed and secretly continued his spree of terror.

Lucas is present when House Dragen swears its fealty to Robb Stark, although Lucas claims that it is all just nonsense. When Garth leaves Snake Mount to join Robb he allows Lucas to act as Lord of Snake Mount.[7]

The War has begun[]

Lucius new hair

Lucas cut his hair into a war mohawk shortly before the Greyjoys attacked Snake Mount.

Lucas is now acting Lord of Snake Mount while his father has left to fight in Robb's war. While in Snake Mount, he organizes a feast in Snake Mount's great hall, apparently to "keep old alliances intact". Among his guests are Lord Hendrick Grayburn of Brightbank and his wife and two daughters (his son, Carmine, is away fighting with Robb Stark.) However, Lucas secretly has fed his dinner guests Lord Dustin of Barrowton. Lucas' cannibalistic tendencies are shown for the first time here.

Rollo-lothbrok-ragnar-lothbrok-vikings-1024x683

Lucas confronts Caspus Harlaw during the Siege of Snake Mount.

As part of Balon Greyjoy's attempt to conquer the North and once again become King of the Iron Islands, he sends his nephew Caspus Harlaw (the younger brother of Cerran Harlaw) to lay siege to Snake Mount at the same time he sends his daughter Yara to attack Deepwood Motte. Lucas personally commands Snake Mount's forces in battle, and even duels Caspus himself (and seemingly kills him when the throws him from Snake Mount's battlements; it is later revealed that he survived.) The battle is brief but bloody, and ultimately, Snake Mount remains under Dragen control after Robb Stark sends Carmine Grayburn and Rufus Caswell to Snake Mount with reinforcements. After the battle, Lucas captures an unconscious Vyran, a Kogathi who served as Caspus' first mate on board his flagship, the Reaper's Bounty and participated in the battle.

File:Lucius Siege of Snake Mount.jpeg

Lucas keeps Vyran at Snake Mount, where he reportedly brainwashed and tortured him. He sends his eye to Captain Caspus Harlaw as a "gift", to show vengeance being exacted for him attacking Snake Mount. Lucas uses several psychological torture methods to break Vyran, (which included drugging him with sunshine milk) but he did not completely destroy his personality. He uses Vyran as his sleeper agent, to infiltrate the ironborn from within, without Vyran knowing that he is secretly working for Lucas. Vyran is forced to undertake several tasks for Lucas, to ensure that he is completely under his control. Eventually, Vyran escaped. Whether he was set loose or if he escaped by himself, is uncertain. When he returns to Caspus, Vyran is shown to have a certain degree of PTSD, being more violent and brutish, having memory blackouts, and secretly sabotaging parts of the ironborn campaigns in the North (including freeing a captive Carmine Grayburn from ironborn captivity at Moat Cailin.) Later, Caspus is able to break through Lucas' "programming" of Vyran, but not before Vyran had successfully carried out the sabotage without his knowledge.

Secretly, Lucas has also tried to manipulate Robb's successes in the war. He apparently was responsible for the deaths of several Northern noblemen, which in turn, weakened and destabilised some of Robb's allies' morals. Not only has this great consequences for the Northern party, but also for the other opposing factions.[8]

Prince of the Moths[]

Prelude[]

In 300 AL, in the midst of the War of the Five Kings, nine people in the Westerlands are all mysteriously murdered. A serial killer nicknamed "The Monster of the Westerlands" stalks and murders seemingly random families during sequential crescent moons. He first kills the entire household of the noble House Crakehall, then the Blackwoods of Raventree Hall. Two days after the Blackwood murders, Ethan Snow, a bastard son of Lord Harkon Dragen, seeks out his half-nephew, Lucas, hoping that he could aid him in catching the killer. Ethan goes to Lucas and pleads for his assistance and Lucas reluctantly agrees. After looking into the murders with only minimal insight, Lucas can immediately identify the murderer's MO and possible motives.

Catching Timos Crakehall[]

Prince-of-the-moths

The "Prince of the Moths".

"The Monster of the Westerlands" is revealed to be the Lord of Crakehall himself named Lord Timos Crakehall. He is a disturbed individual who appears to be - mental-wise - equal to his nemesis, Lucas Dragen. This leads to a never-ending vendetta war between two cannibalistic serial killers, both with incredible psychological insights and cunning wits.

While investigating a seemingly abandoned Raventree Hall, Lucas and Ethan discover a young woman holding an older, deceased woman in her arms. The girl is Alanis Blackwood, the last surviving female of the Blackwood line who is holding a dead Lady Blackwood in her arms. It is discovered that the last surviving male of the Blackwoods, Alanis's brother, has fled from the Riverlands, seeking refuge with his maternal grandparents. Lucas and Ethan offer Alanis shelter at Snake Mount, and Ethan promises that they will catch the culprit of the Raventree slaughters.

Alanis also aids Ethan and Lucas in their quest to capture or kill Timos Crakehall; she effectively becomes a bounty hunter who hunts criminals for gold. Gradually, Lucas and Alanis become lovers. After the two make passionate love in Lucas's personal bedchambers, Alanis leaves to investigate Crakehall.

Timos crucified

Timos Crakehall is crucified by Lucas.

While travelling to Crakehall, Alanis is kidnapped by Lord Timos. Timos is trying to test Lucas's skills and determination by capturing her and informing Lucas about his and Alanis's whereabouts. However, when Lucas finds out, things take a turn for the worse.

Timos ruthlessly and brutally murders Alanis by eating her alive. When Lucas hears of this, he is enraged and is determined to execute Timos. Together with Ethan, they organize a raid against him.

With the assistance of Lucas Dragen, Ethan is able to track down and find the psychotic Lord Crakehall and in a two against one fight, are able to defeat him. With Lord Timos outmatched and completely exhausted, Lucas crucifies him against a crudely made wooden, splintered cross. As Timos hangs at an humiliating position, he dies from asphyxiation.[9]

Father of the Dead[]

The Sack of Riften[]

Luciusdualpersonality

Lucas torments Rylen Mollen.

Garth returns from the aftermath of the Red Wedding, severely wounded. He gives Lucas free reign to do as he pleases, and is no longer reluctant to Lucas' actions. This gives him some sort of limited free will.

Lucas nearly became an advisor to Carmine Grayburn during the formation of what would eventually become Grayburn's Legion after his father agreed to supplement Carmine's growing forces with a sizable number of his household guard. Lucas seems interested in the idea, but for different reasons rather than liberating the North. However, Carmine, leery of Lucas' reputation (having good reasons to do so) declined this offer.

House Mollen, a vassal of House Dragen, begin to question Lord Garth's rule and capability to lead. They join up with House Lannister and rebel against him. Lucas marches with less than fifty men onto Riften's gates and puts the town to the torch, as well as killing several members of the Mollen household. Lord Mollen and his son, Edgar are killed by Lucas. Rylen Mollen is taken hostage and Rolan escapes. This event is known as the Sack of Riften,[10] or the Massacre at Riften. Lucas takes pride in his monstrous actions and boasts about the people he killed. As a result, he is dubbed "The Butcher of Riften".[11]

Raven vs stag

"The Raven" fights "The Stag".

Shortly after the Sack of Riften, Lucas was visited by the infamous vigilante known as The Raven, who attempted to assassinate him. The Raven, whose real name is Sarina, was present during the Sack of Riften and was trying to eliminate the traitorous members of House Mollen herself, having infiltrated Riften disguised as a refugee named "Jeyne". Lucas incorrectly believed that she was sent by the remains of House Mollen or possibly an assassin of House Bolton. Though Lucas survived the assassination attempt, after suffering a cut from one of Sarina's daggers (which was coated in the Tears of Lys) he was left ill for a few days. This would spark a lasting vendetta between Lucas and Sarina, and from then on, Lucas would refer to her as "that bastard bitch".[12]

Rylen Mollen, now a prisoner of Lucas, is subjected to extreme physical and psychological tortures. He is led to believe that his brother, Rolan, has been found and killed by Lucas's men, indicating that there is no hope left for the future of the Mollen family. When Lucas has finally broken Rolan, he is able to retrieve the information needed on Rolan Mollen's actual whereabouts. Lucas eventually finds out that Rolan is currently in Meereen under the protection of Daenerys Targaryen. With Rylen having exhausted all useful information, he is lobotomised and moulded into a mindless thrall of Lucas.

One day, Lanna Ashford, an old acquaintance of Garth Dragen, visited Lucas. She claimed that she came to Snake Mount to cement a trade alliance between House Ashford which had been set up prior to the war. Lucas, doubting her story, told her that "the Dragens never forget an offer". Sneakily, Lanna searched Lucas' cupboard filled with potions and took one vial containing a milky substance, believing it to be milk of the poppy. Lanna suggested for a toast to acknowledge this new alliance. She drugged Lucas' wine with the "milk of the poppy" and after Lucas drank it, his body started becoming numb and he was vividly hallucinating. Lanna then proceeded to strip him and raped him, claiming that his hidden battle prowess would produce "offspring of giants".

After the deed was done, Lanna left Snake Mount. However, after drinking the potion, Lucas accidentally started hallucinating himself, resulting in his mental state becoming gradually more unstable. Afterwards, Lucas became convinced that his own sub-conscious was out to kill him. His hallucinations started to become more realistic later on.[13]

Rise as Lord of Snake Mount[]

Lucas becomes Lord of Snake Mount after his father, Lord Garth is mercilessly killed by the Boltons.[14] Enraged by the death of his father, Lucas tracks down one of Garth's killers named Barden Frey, a notorious rapist.

Barden went through numerous trials prior to meeting with Lucas after being convicted of child molestation, and for viciously raping his own sister. Lucas entered Barden's home somewhere in the Riverlands one night disguised as "Septon Clarton". Lucas drugged Barden and suggested he try cutting off his own face with a mirror shard. Barden complied and, again at Lucas's suggestion, fed some of his face to his dogs and ate his own nose. Lucas then broke Barden's neck with a rope used for auto-erotic asphyxiation and left him to die. Barden survived, but was left hideously disfigured and forever confined to a wheelchair.[15]

At the White Knife, the same place where Lucas defeated Manwell several years ago, he is seen washing his face. He is approached by a pregnant Lanna Ashford. Lucas orders her to leave him alone. But Lanna, who remains determined, mocks Lucas on how he is not as powerful as he turned out to be, as he let his guard down and was sexually assaulted by a woman. As Lanna walks away, Lucas reaches his breaking point and grabs Lanna and places her face down in the water. After drowning her, Lucas leaves her body to be washed downstream, realising that he has just killed a woman pregnant with his unborn son.

Lucius blood eagle

Lucas brutally executes Ser Beric Cerwyn

Another victim of Lucas' Hunt was Ser Beric Cerwyn, a member of King Robb Stark's Wolfguard who was, secretly, an infiltrator of the Blackwatch, and had become commander of all the Blackwatch forces in the North after the Red Wedding and later relayed Garth's movements to Steelshanks so he could get into place to kill him. Lucas sent his Butcher's Boys to Beric's hideout and ordered them to kill every one present, except for Ser Beric. Elden the Beater, the least malicious of the Boys, was commanded to take Beric's lover, Edeline, prisoner and keep her from harm, as Lucas was planning to use her as ransom for the Blackwatch.[16] After Ser Beric had been taken prisoner, Lucas shows him to Anthor Dyser and declares that he will perform an old ritual on him.[17] Lucas had him executed through an ancient, and outlawed ritual known as the "Blood Eagle": he severed Beric's ribs from the vertebral column with a sharp implement and then pulled his lungs through the opening to create a pair of "wings".[18]

After Garth's death, Lucas takes up responsibility of leading House Dragen, much to his family's dismay. This results in his sister, Mira, and their youngest brother Domeric to leave Snake Mount in fear of Lucas's power. The two siblings seek refuge in Deepwood Motte, their mother's former home. However, they find the motte overrun by Yara Greyjoy's men. Lucas is aware of the castle's occupation and therefore declines to pursuit Mira and Domeric, ultimately leaving them to their fates as a "suitable punishment".

Lucas eventually married Larinna Harrigon, the daughter of Lord Jothos of House Harrigon.[19] In the first weeks of their marriage Lucas psychologically tormented her. Lucas tried to keep Larinna in total isolation to manipulate her. However, Lucas' plan to brainwash Larinna ultimately failed, as he utterly underestimated her strong will; Larinna refused to have her own personality sublimated, and so, Lucas and Larinna held an uncomfortable, but remarkably stable relationship. However, during one of Lucas and Larinna's fights, Larinna tried to defend herself and incidentally left a deep scar on Lucas's left eye. Following these "incidents", Lucas has still held a hateful relationship with Larinna's father, Lord Jothos and her brother, Ser Rickard. Some time later, Larinna gave birth to Lucas' first born son and heir Warron. It was made apparent that the only person Lucas felt any real affection and love for is his son.

Lucas's ultimate desire was to manipulate and control the two girls from Smithestone, Larinna and Lucas's new bastard aunt-by-marriage, Arrena Storm. However, in order to control and corrupt them, he had to get rid of his uncle, Ethan Snow. And so, he eventually made a deal with Ramsay Bolton, Roose Bolton's legitimized bastard son. Ramsay would kill Ser Ethan and in turn, Lucas would give Ramsay Arrena. At the end of the Battle of Winterfell, Ethan was betrayed by his own men and killed by Ramsay.[20]

After Ethan's death, Barden Frey became obsessed with getting revenge on Lucas, hiring an elite gang of Windblown kidnappers and using House Frey's resources to create a special breed of gigantic, vicious wild boars, intending to have Lucas captured and then slowly eaten alive. He also posted a bounty on Lucas: 500 Gold Dragons for Dragen's head, but 1000 Gold Dragons for Dragen alive. An assassin from Pennytree named Barroth attempted to collect the former bounty by assassinating him, but ended up being killed himself. Lucas sent Barden a letter, chiding him for his men's clumsiness and promising "before you die you will see my face."

Realising that Lucas was fascinated with Larinna Harrigon, Barden used his contacts in the North to try to have Larinna arrested on false claims that she had been aiding Lucas in his monstrous deeds.

Boars eat barden

Barden Frey is eaten alive by his own boars.

Barden succeeded in luring Lucas to the Riverlands long enough for his men to kidnap him, but Lucas was rescued by Bertha Frey, who had since abandoned her abusive brother in order to exact revenge. Barden retreated to his keep, but was confronted by Bertha. Demanding to know where Lucas is, Bertha calmly said that he already entered the keep. Lucas appeared and confronted Barden. Barden, visually terrified and shocked, tried to shield his eyes from Lucas while shaking uncontrollably. Lucas drove Barden in his wheelchair to the boar pit and was planning on feeding him to his own boars. Instead, he offered Bertha to do it. Bertha kicked Barden in the pit where he was eaten alive by the boars. Bertha insisted that Lucas should come with her and impregnate her, so that she can produce another heir for him. Lucas, however, left the keep and returned back to Snake Mount.

Resurrection of Ethan Snow[]

With the deaths of Ethan Snow and Lord Jothos Harrigon, Lucas now had complete dominion and free reign over his new hostages. He imprisons Arrena, intending to give her to Ramsay Bolton to finish his end of the bargain. Lucas's greatest prize, however, was Larinna. He had her thrown into the dungeons alongside Arrena and repeatedly psychologically tortured her. His goal was to turn her into a brainwashed servant, forever bound to Lucas's will.

After the Battle of Winterfell, Ethan Snow is discovered by a traveler. He brings him back to Snake Mount where he is treated by Maester Vahaelor. Unfortunately, Ethan could not be saved because his injuries were too great. His body stays in the Maester's room. Fortunately for Lucas, Ethan's death would mean that Lucas could do as he wants to Arrena without having to fear the wrath of his uncle.

A traveller arrives in Snake Mount, a red priest named Vurus. Vurus volunteers to bring Ethan Snow back to life but in turn, he has to sacrifice another soul to the Lord of Light. Lucas's younger brother, Erik Dragen, the orchestrator of the Coup against Lucas Dragen. volunteers to be burned alive in order to bring Ethan back. The resurrection of Ethan would surely end with Lucas's demise, and Erik felt he had no choice.

Downfall[]

Lucius confronts Ethan

Lucas imprisons Arrena Storm and Larinna Harrigon.

After Ethan's resurrection, the two engage in a duel, where Lucas is believed to have died. After Lucas' supposed death, Ethan releases Arrena and Larinna. However, Lucas awakens after his fatal injury and manages to flee from Snake Mount, killing several people and wounding Maester Vahaelor. Lucas kills a Braavosi nobleman, Thorodos Oderah, steals his identity and sets sail for Braavos.

Using his face, Lucas disguised himself as Oderah to hide from Ethan's men. Thanks to his linguistic skills, including mastering the High Valyrian language, he was able to adopt the Braavosi lifestyle very quickly and was successful in fooling many noblemen into believing that he was indeed the wealthy nobleman.

Lucius as thorodos oderah

Lucas, disguised as Thorodos Oderah, speaks to Arya Stark.

Lucas visits the House of Black and White where he encounters Arya Stark. Arya, having renounced her alliegance to the Faceless Men, has decided to return home to Westeros. Lucas, in his disguise, correctly identifies her as Arya Stark and claims that he believed that all the Starks had been killed at the Red Wedding. Arya says she was going to "pay a visit" to Walder Frey, to which Lucas tells her that he "likes his pies."

Ethan, after finding out about Lucas' escape, sends several assassins to Essos to find Lucas and bring him to justice. Each time an assassin is sent, they are never heard from again.

Eventually, Lucas left Braavos and has once again gone into hiding. According to Ethan's spies, Lucas has disappeared into the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai and has not been seen since. However, this was simply a ruse set up by Lucas to mislead Ethan.[21]

Lucas merely traveled to the north-east of Essos, to the Kogathi Highlands. Lucas, being at the peak of his madness, attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself to a tree during his journey to the Highlands. However, the rope broke before he could lose consciousness. Afterwards, Lucas continued his journey, while many still believed that he was in the Shadow Lands.[22]

Final confrontation with the Raven[]

Before arriving in White Harbor, Lucas was confronted by Sarina Waters a second time. This time, she found him alone, and she was prepared. Lucas, knowing that, combat-wise, she would outmatch him, chose to employ one of his cunning tricks in order to sway her to avoid killing him. Lucas and Sarina entered into a melee fight with Sarina as the victor. As Lucas was at Sarina's mercy, he sarcastically congratulated her victory. Before killing him, Sarina asked Lucas why he had done all these monstrosities and what the purpose was. Lucas admittedly told her that he is unstable, and that the things he does he does because it feels good to him. While Sarina still had her dagger at Lucas' throat, the Lord of the Hunt asked her why she hadn't killed him yet, to which he jokingly asked if she had already fell in love with him. Sarina shrugged off his remarks but suddenly felt uncomfortable killing Lucas. Reluctantly, she pulled her blade away and told him that she was not like him. As Lucas rose, and because Sarina let her guard down, he tackled her and forcefully made her drink the hallucinative drug Sunshine milk.

Sarina's body was completely numb and she was unable to move, although she was still aware of her surroundings. Lucas gloated over her and called her a "foolish girl". While Sarina was hallucinating, Lucas came close to her and whispered in her ear: "You are my finest creation. I will never leave you. In you, I live on. Finish what I have started", before kicking her in the face, causing her to lose consciousness, and leaving her.

Death[]

Ethan, however, knew that Lucas was still in Essos and not in the Shadow Lands. Every time he send assassins to kill him, they never returned. As a result, Ethan enlisted the help of the former sellsword Jaqelos Eranelion from the Free City of Tyrosh.

Jaqelos, and a band of freelance mercenaries aboard the vessel Valorous were tasked to sail on the Rhoyne and Qhoyne rivers and then continue their journey onland towards the Kogathi Highlands, a jungle region northeast of Essos where Lucas was last spotted.

Along the way, Jaqelos learned valuable information on his target. The more he began to understand Lucas' personality and reasons for his insanity, the more he sympathised with him. Even though he was a trained assassin - knowing that you can't let personal feelings get in the way of your contract - this was still a hard thing to do.

Lucius old

Due to traumatic shock and complete isolation, Lucas looks like he has aged thirty years.

When Jaqelos confronted Lucas, he has significantly changed. According to the stories, Lucas appeared as a young, healthy, and handsome man. When Jaqelos encounters him, he almost thinks that he found the wrong man; Lucas has shaved his head bald, he has a long black beard with grey plucks of hair, a tired face with bags under his eyes and he appeared to be slightly fat. He no longer has his iconic eyepatch and his facial scar on his eye is visible. Overall, it looked like Lucas has aged thirty years.

Lucas, now at the peak of his insanity, speaks to his followers.

Eventually, when Jaqelos arrived at Lucas' hideout deep in the jungle, he couldn't bring to kill the man. He spent several days as his prisoner trying to think of how he was going to end this. To his surprise, Lucas freed him - but under guard. This was, according to Jaqelos, a sign that Lucas wanted him to kill him. Jaqelos eventually chose to finish his contract but at the same time, somewhere beyond the Wall, Brandon Stark wargs into Tregar Blackgard's heart tree, and accidentally travels too far back in the past and ends up at the site of Lucas' vicious stag attack. He sees Lucas as a twelve year old boy only moments before the attack. Bran inadvertently, and accidentally, wargs into Lucas, linking the minds of the present-day Lucas and the young Lucas from the past. At the moment of the linking, Jaqelos slays Lucas with a dothraki arakh. This mental trauma causes Lucas to suffer a seizure in the past when he is attacked by the stag, during which he sees Bran and his future murderer, Jaqelos, at the same time. In the past, he is attacked by the stag and in the present day, he is slain by Jaqelos. Both present-day and 12-year old Lucas see visions of Bran on both occasions. Through Bran's warging, young Lucas experiences his own future death, damaging his mind. As present-day Lucas dies from his wounds, young Lucas loses conscience. When Bran exits the warging, he immediately realises that he was the cause of Lucas' descent into madness and that all along, he was the stag that attacked him. He now also knows that Lucas has died somewhere in the Kogathi Highlands.

Post-mortem[]

House Black[]

Lucas himself had many lovers and secret mistresses, even after his marriage to Larinna Harrigon. Most, if not all, of these lovers bore many bastard children for him; some he knows exist, and some he doesn't. Many of his acknowledged bastards hold great respect and love for him. Lucas himself secretly supported these acknowledged bastards by sending them large sums of money and guards to watch over them.

After his death, many of his bastards grouped together to form House Black, a "bastard house" made up of the many secret sons and daughters of the Lord of the Hunt. Led by Lucas' eldest child, Lucion, the Blacks vowed to take revenge on Lucas' former enemies and wrong-doers. The Blacks started their campaign by completing Lucas' vendetta with Sarina Waters, an old nemesis of his.

The Blacks eventually allied themselves with the Brotherhood of Darkness, a religious sect dedicated to the veneration of the Red Dragon. They claimed that they have found a way to bring the deceased Lucas back to this world by performing a ritual similar to the one the Red Priests use to bring back a dead man. They claim that they are able to capture Lucas' roaming soul into the body of one of his sons. Lucion subsequently offers himself to bring his father back to life, but whether the Brotherhood will go through with this plan remains uncertain.

Last act of vengeance[]

Although no longer being physically present in the world, Lucas Dragen's influence kept growing. After Sarina Waters drank Lucas' Sunshine milk shortly after their fight, Sarina's mind became twisted and "re-programmed" by him. She became convinced that she had bested and killed Lucas after her fight with him, only for "Lucas" to reappear constantly before her. The hallucinative nature of the sunshine milk succeeded in creating a projection of Lucas based on Sarina's past experiences with him. So, indirectly, Lucas remained "alive", albeit in Sarina's mind.

Lucas Dragen's projection of himself convinced Sarina that even though he was dead, his followers and influence were still very much alive. So, in order to get rid of Lucas' remaining evil and to remove him from her head, Sarina systematically had to assassinate key members of Lucas' Butcher's Boys and other associates. After killing all of the remaining Butcher's Boys, Sarina and "Lucas" confronted Grond, Lucas' right hand man who became the de-facto leader of the Boys after his master left Westeros. Before killing him, Lucas unsheathed his knife and said "I am Lucas Dragen and I will have my revenge!", and then slitting his throat.

After Lucas had killed Grond, Sarina lost consciousness and collapsed, only to be woken up by a mysterious hooded figure. The hooded figure removed their cowl and revealed themselves to be Larinna Harrigon. Larinna gave Sarina wine, as she claimed that the alcohol acted as some form of antidote against the Milk. As Sarina regained her bearings she discovered, to her shock, the body of the Master with a cut-open throat. Larinna claimed that she witnessed Sarina kill the Master, while Sarina wholeheartedly claimed that she just witnessed Lucas kill Grond. Larinna explained to her that Lucas has died in the Kogathi Highlands and that everything that she saw was a mere projection of him. Sarina then remembered the people she had killed on "Lucas'" orders, and she eventually discovered that the people she killed were in fact no more than innocent civilians instead of allies of Lucas. Larinna then said that Lucas always managed to gain the upper hand and that even in death, he still triumphs. Sarina came to realize that thanks to Lucas, she had destroyed every single bit of innocence and sense of hope left inside of her, as she had just become the very thing she swore to destroy: injustice.

Resurrection[]

After the White Walkers' invasion of Westeros, the Brotherhood of Darkness - a Walker-worshipping cult - got hold of the Necronomicon, a highly controversial and banned set of spells and incantations from ancient times. They wished to use the tome to resurrect Lucas, believing him to be the Red Dragon and the harbinger of the end times. However, Lucas had been decapitated following his death by Jaqelos Eranelion, effectively preventing him to be resurrected. Lucion Black, Lucas' bastard son, offered himself to bring back his father from the dead.

Eventually, Lucion was captured by the Zul Joriin in the Ashlands and brought to Sunhold. He was interrogated by Ethon and the Whistleblower, who claimed to have been at the Orkmont Massacre and that he had "saved" the many people that died there. Lucion protested against it, claiming that the ironborn died there thanks to his father.

Unbeknownst to the Zul Joriin, Lucion and Abdar Alhos communicated back and forth, apparently preparing to initiate the resurrection. When Lucion was brought before the Zul Joriin once again, he pulled out a knife and slit his wrist, before proclaiming the Red Dragon reborn. Lucion's body lay lifeless and was thrown near the beach of the Sea of Dorne. A little while later, Lucion's body was reanimated. His eyes changed from blue to maroon-red, indicating that whatever ritual Lucion committed worked, and Lucas returned from the dead.

Victims[]

"Barden: [Laughing hysterically] I'm....hungry!
Lucas: Eat your nose, then.
"
―Lucas and Barden, during Barden's mutilation

Lucas's confirmed number of victims is 30 (most of his victims originate from the North, but several others were also murdered in areas south of the Neck). By the time Lucas was exposed by Ethan Snow, 17 victims were known, Garvy and the bow hunter being added to his original list of 15. Lucas also tried to murder three others in his vengeance series. He also attacked a cleaner and drove a man to suicide. It is uncertain whether the Starks knew of Lucas's role in the murder of three of Robb Stark's bannermen. Lucas also killed the Braavosi nobleman Thorodos Oderah in order to steal his identity.

Modus operandi[]

Lucas' MO was unique compared to other serial killers or psychopaths because he was known to kill based on retribution, discourtesy and poetic justice along with necessity.

Retribution

Most of Lucas' murders were carried out for revenge and retribution. This characteristic of his MO started early on, his first (the huntsman) and second (Garvy) murders were all based upon revenge, the former being from the hunter denying Lucas food and the latter for Garvy's father throwing sexual remarks at him. The most relevant series of murders based on revenge was when he murdered all the members of the group of men that killed his father Garth. He was seen neglectfully torturing Barden Frey for retribution for raping a tavern girl he previously met and for Garth's murder. He also murdered Olivar Errol for disgracing his sister Mira.

Discourtesy

Lucas was most widely known to kill because of discourtesy and rudeness. This is first discovered when he beheaded Kegan after he insulted his mother. Lucas told Larinna that discourtesy was "unspeakably ugly" to him. This was seen again after he drove Duncas to suicide after he offended him.

Poetic Justice

Lucas' signature style was poetic justice, placing his victim's bodies in positions that imitated the positions of figures in historical documents. His most referenced poetic justice style murder was with his fourteenth victim, who was laced to a pegboard in the position of a butterfly or a dragon, showcasing King Aegon the Unworthy's personality. Lucas also killed Barroth the assassin in a particularly strange way. He cut off Barroth's ears and tongue and also removed his eyeballs. This could be referenced from the phrase "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".

Aliases[]

Lucas had a number of aliases and false names, which he used when plotting a kill in order to escape from justice, usually from the Starks or from his father's own wrath:

  • Carth Coldrin, a name he took when plotting to kill Briden Merryweather.
  • Septon Clarton, a name he took when plotting to mutilate Barden Frey.
  • Thorodos Oderah, a name he took after he fled from Snake Mount. He used this name during his stay in Braavos to hide himself from Ethan Dragen and his men. He also performed a number of self-modifications to make himself unrecognizable. Lucas took this identity from the eponymous Thorodos Oderah, a Braavosi nobleman and spice trader.

Lucas was also nicknamed by other people based on his actions and deeds. Some of these aliases include:

  • The Demon of the North, an alias Lucas was given after he became the Lord of Snake Mount.
  • The Butcher of Riften, an alias Lucas was given after the Sack of Riften.
  • Lord of the Hunt, a self-proclaimed "title" held by Lucas after the events of Lord of the Hunt.
  • The Beheaded Stag. Lucas was often called this way by the people he brainwashed and drove insane. According to these people, they dreamt of a large, majestic black stag who keeps following them around in a dense forest. Some people have also claimed to see a tall, humanoid, pitch-black figure with antlers staring down at them with glowing red eyes. Larinna Harrigon claimed to symbolically view Lucas in this manner. Majestic, charming, but simultaneously ominous, frightening and manipulative.
  • Baratheon's Bane. An alternative name for The Beheaded Stag, because of House Baratheon's affiliation with stags as their heraldry.

Personality and traits[]

"Robb: "What about Lucas?"
Garth: "I've ordered him to stay at Snake Mount. Someone needs to be in command while I'm gone."
Robb: "You hate him."
Garth: "I don't trust him.
"
Robb Stark and Garth Dragen

Before the events of Lord of the Hunt, Lucas was kind-hearted, clever, adventurous and, sometimes, quite anti-social, but not fundamentally malicious. He showed love and care for his family, friends - even though he utterly lacked them at times - and nature. He once remarked that he held great respect for trees and considered them to be the "messengers of nature". Beneath his supposed confident exterior lay the personality of an insecure, anxious and naive young boy.

It was only after his survival in the Northern wilderness that Lucas's original personality had been seemingly obliterated. Over time, he showed that he could be ruthless, cruel, ominous and - sometimes - commit pure evil atrocities. On one occasion he ripped a hunter apart like a wolf tears at a deer, in pure revenge for the hunter refusing to share food with him. Afterwards, he ripped open the hunter's abdomen and consumed his body parts. This is where Lucas's apparent apatite for human flesh originated. After he returned to Snake Mount safely, his new, psychopathic personality took a turn for the worse.[23]

Nice Lucius

Lucas Dragen, a seemingly calm and gentlemanly individual...

Mad Lucius

...is actually a psychotic, merciless cannibal.

Lucas's calm and calculating demeanor, combined with his psychotic nature, unique intellect and unpredictable personality give him a terrifying, nightmarish persona of a manipulative, cruel, but also an intelligent and calculating individual. One notable example of his shifty personality is that of his incredible, almost inhuman calmness. Even when in battle or in the middle of a violent murder, Lucas stays completely calm, never showing emotions of anxiety, anger or reluctance. In contrast with any other psychotic individuals of his level (i.e. Ramsay Bolton, Joffrey Baratheon, etc.) who do express certain emotions when performing any immoral activities. Even Maester Vahaelor once mentioned that Lucas is an "empty husk of man. Hollow, emotionless and repentless". Although he is considered to be the embodiment and personification of evil, Lucas does have some sort of "code of discipline" to which he strictly adheres to. He does not, for one, harm animals, children or the sick and feeble, this was shown during one of his raids, where he saved a child from being killed by the Butcher's Boys by covering him with a sheet.[24] Furthermore, Lucas doted on his bastard children, occasionally visiting them to spend time with them.[25] Ironically, this "code" did not apply to his other family relatives. For instance, Lucas once bribed Ramsay Bolton to murder his own bastard uncle, Ethan Snow, simply for opportunistic reasons.[26] Lucas comes off mostly as charismatic, seductive, and gentlemanly.

Despite his savage nature, Lucas is capable of loving and doing almost anything for those he cares about, a trait which he likely inherited from his father. This is shown and mentioned multiple times. One time, he brutally murdered another cannibal who was responsible for the death of Alanis Blackwood, a young girl from the Riverlands and a close lover of Lucas. He reportedly crucified him without remorse. One major example of this behaviour was when he hunted down the group of men who killed his father. Another notable example is Larinna Harrigon, a girl from the Smithlands whom Lucas had married through an arranged marriage set up by his father and Larinna's father, Lord Jorthos Harrigon. Although Larinna and Lucas initially held a fairly hostile relationship, Lucas did show some certain feelings for Larinna. Not necessarily love, but certainly some form of obsession. Whatever Lucas' reasons where for this uncommon behaviour remains unknown.

In addition to his amazing intelligence, Lucas is able to unveil and discover a person's true nature. He is able to detect lies, sense treachery or disloyalty and other forms of trickery and deceit. He can also use this special mental ability to "brainwash" unsuspecting victims to his will. This rare ability also allows him to inflict mental harm unto his victims, like he did to Duncas the stable boy, whom he had driven to suicide via talking him into choking his tongue.

Lucas's unique intellect and memory was the product of a well-developed Ars Memoriae, or Memory Palace, a form of mnemonic discipline.[6] The young Lucas was taught this discipline by his tutor, Maester Vahaelor. This ability allowed Lucas to memorize almost every little detail, although the palace could be a dangerous place for him. In one instance, Lucas retired to his palace in search of comfort only to become haunted by horrific memories he or his subconscious mind had stored there in numerous oubliettes. He also used it as a sanctuary; when he was all alone in the Northern wilderness, he entered his memory palace and laid his face against the coolness of the snow. It was mentioned by Vahaelor that he could have several unrelated trains of thought going at the same time without disturbance from one another.[27] This was explained by his ability to operate the separate hemispheres of his brain so that they acted independently.

Lucas' competency to carry out his kills efficiently and decisively, in sharp contrast to the likes of the sociopathic Ramsay, the cowardly Joffrey, and the cautious, yet impulsive Roose, all three who have fallen victim to their own machinations, is that Lucas has the ability to constantly be thinking in advance. Before carrying out his actions, Lucas tries to observe the situation and its consequences beforehand, decides when and how to strike, and then executing his actions. This culminates in Lucas never being caught or punished for his crimes, and him successfully escaping judgement without any major negative consequences.

As shown by his favourite means of execution, Lucas is a confirmed cannibal. Although he occasionally eats his victims raw and unspoiled,[28] Lucas most commonly likes to kidnap and drug his victims. Once they are in his control, he kills and cooks them.

Lucas is also afflicted with a number of mental and personality disorders including PTSD (although this has deteriorated over the years), severe psychopathy, sadism (to some degree), narcissism, and BPD.

Skills and abilities[]

"Believe me, you don't want Lucas Dragen inside your head."
―Roose Bolton

Lucas was regarded to be one of the most skilled warriors in the Seven Kingdoms, at one point Lucas was even offered a position among King Robert Baratheon's Kingsguard, a position which he refused. Lucas also possessed incredible knowledge and wisdom about the human mind which aided him into inflicting pain and terror into the minds of his victims. Lucas's aristocratic background and charming character also aided him into tricking and misguiding many of his enemies.

  • Psychological Mastery: Lucas, mental-wise, is controlled, collected, and calm. He has complete mastery over his own mind and is able to suppress any negative emotions, whether it is anxiety, sadness or anger. He can use this to mislead his enemies or to successfully tell a lie. In addition to this, Lucas also has a well-developed Memory Palace; he is able to retrieve any information he has ever received or accumulated in his life, he is able to memorise every single detail, whether it would be important information and backgrounds of people, or a tiny crevice on a wall, he can remember it all.
  • Strength: Despite his small stature, Lucas is deceptively strong. He is able to endure long brawls or fistfights without becoming exhausted. This was shown when he had a brutal fight with Manwell in Lord of the Hunt. Even though Manwell was older, more experienced and twice his size, Lucas did came out victorious and Manwell was completely at his mercy. Lucas's ruthless and animalistic fight style could also be an important factor in his never-occurring fatigue.
  • Survival skills: At a young age, Lucas was exposed to extreme conditions after he was attacked by two, strongly-built stags. Suffering fatal and painful cuts and wounds, Lucas had to make his way back to Snake Mount, to safety. In order to do so, Lucas had to survive the extreme Northern wilderness during a heavy and unforgiving winter. Alongside wild animals and extreme weathers, Lucas also had to fight off Manwell's Hunters, who were out for revenge after Lucas attacked a member of their team. Surviving these extreme and dangerous conditions would've killed any other man, let alone a child. Nevertheless, Lucas made it back to Snake Mount with the help of Lady Catelyn Stark and Maester Luwin, but was also left with mental disorders including PTSD and Psychopathy.
  • Multilingual: Lucas is multilinguistic, he is able to read (and possibly speak) several languages, including High Valyrian, Low Valyrian, the Common Tongue, and possibly the Old Tongue.
  • Face-changing: Due to Ethan Dragen's affiliation with the Faceless Men, Lucas was also taught the ability to change his own face with that of someone else. He used this three times; once while disguised as "Carth Coldrin"; a second time to disguise himself as "Septon Clarton"; and most recently to disguise himself as "Thorodos Oderah", a wealthy Braavosi nobleman.

Relationships[]

Ethan Dragen[]

Lucas and Ethan initially held an indifferent and neutral relationship, and they did not have a real "uncle-nephew" bond. Over the years, however, Lucas aids Ethan in tracking down the infamous serial killer Timos Crakehall. Ethan therefore calls Lucas his friend multiple times throughout the show. Lucas, however, manipulates and withholds very important information from him. Lucas is also Ethan's mental caretaker, some sort of psychiatrist, which puts him in a great position as someone who Ethan can truly trust, seeing as there are no other characters he can truly call his "friends" with no strings attached. Lucas ultimately reveals his true colours after he betrayed Ethan by employing Ramsay Bolton to kill him.

Larinna Harrigon[]

Lucas met Larinna through an arranged marriage set up by Lord Jorthos Harrigon and Lord Garth Dragen. Lucas and Larinna held a very hostile and violent relationship, mainly because Lucas intended to brainwash and manipulate Larinna, which he failed to do so in the end. Larinna refused to let Lucas toy with her mind, but mentioned multiple times that living with Lucas and shielding her thoughts from him were heavy and required a great deal of her strength. After Lord Jorthos's death, Larinna was stricken with grief, which allowed Lucas to enter her mind. In doing so, he found a great deal of information which he found most fascinating. He later used this information to break Larinna and Arrena Storm's spirit.

Garth Dragen[]

Garth Dragen was Lucas's father, and the sole person Lucas ever feared, being the only one to keep him in line. Before the events of Lord of the Hunt, Lucas and Garth held a good father-and-son relationship. After Lucas's survival in the Northern wilderness, however, Garth's role as a father deteriorated and he dedicated the majority of his life in bringing Lucas back to sanity, without any success. As the years followed, Garth became more wary of Lucas, and kept a very close watch on him.

Rickard Harrigon[]

Rickard Harrigon became Lucas's mortal enemy after he found out that his sister was suffering greatly at the hands of Lucas. Rickard initially planned to march onto Snake Mount and execute him but Larinna, wary of Lucas's strategic battle intellect and savage warrior prowess, pleaded for Rickard not to take action and claiming that she could control her deranged husband. After Ethan Snow and Jorthos Harrigon's death, Lucas had Rickard's sister and half-sister, Arrena, locked up in the dungeons, planning to brainwash the both of them. Rickard eventually decided to march onto Snake Mount anyway and lay siege to the castle. He failed to do so, however, when a resurrected Ethan defeated Lucas in a climactic duel.

Maester Vahaelor[]

Vahaelor was Lucas's personal tutor and caretaker. A person with extended knowledge about the human mind, Vahaelor taught Lucas various tricks on how to control his thoughts and emotions, and those of others. Vahaelor extensively nurtured Lucas's rare and extraordinary abilities, and for that he is sometimes accused of "creating" Lucas's psychopathic personality. However, Lucas considered Vahaelor his friend instead of his teacher, and vice versa. When Lucas was planning his escape from Snake Mount, he refused to kill Vahaelor and instead knocked him out cold. He apologised for doing so, as he claimed that he had no other choice.

Ramsay Bolton[]

Lucas and Ramsay only ever met each other once; Lucas personally invited Ramsay to Snake Mount to - as he claimed - declare for peace. Ramsay's true intentions, however, were as savage as they have always been, as he was planning on flaying Lucas alive after he "agreed" for peace. However, he was quickly swayed into Lucas's bidding after less than a hour-long conversation. Ramsay agreed to assassinate Ethan Snow if Lucas would kneel before his father and give him Arrena Storm in return. However, Lucas himself had other plans. When the deed was done, Lucas would murder Ramsay and march upon the Dreadfort masquerading as him. With the Bolton forces at Winterfell distracted, Lucas would seize it. And so, Ramsay, unintentionally, became nothing more than just another puppet in one of Lucas's sadistic games. Lucas himself never viewed Ramsay as an enemy or as a threat; he simply viewed him as another mindless puppet in his own personal game of thrones. Ramsay, however, viewed Lucas as someone who could aid him into achieving his own goals.

Physical appearance[]

Game-of-Thrones 6 26

Lucas had a very powerful presence combined with an unflinching gaze.

Lucas was a handsome, small and well-build man and was deceptively strong. His left hand had a condition called mid ray duplication polydactyly, i.e. a duplicated middle finger. During his survival in the Northern wilderness, he cut off his duplicated middle finger and ate it in order to prevent malnourishment. He had a very light, almost pale skin. Lucas's eyes were a shade of maroon and reflected the light in "pinpoints of red". He also had small white teeth and dark, straight, slicked-back hair. He had a collection of scars spread all over his body as a result from a gruesome stag attack he experienced in his childhood. He recently received a deep scar on his left eye after a fight with his wife, Larinna. Henceforth, he also wore a dark grey eye-patch.

Lucas had a very powerful presence combined with a gaze that is described as "unflinching, penetrative and intimidating".

Due to the traumatic shock that has worsened over the years even after his exile from Snake Mount, Lucas' appearance has dramatically changed. He looked like he had aged thirty years and has shaven his head bald. His black beard has grown larger and has now extended all the way to the center of his chest, with grey plucks appearing on it. He has gained 2 stones in weight and has become slightly plump, his skin has developed wrinkles, and he has bags under his eyes. He removed his eyepatch so that the scar on his left eye is perfectly visible. When Jaqelos Eranelion encounters him for the first time, he almost believes that he has found the wrong man.

Tattoos[]

Lucas, shortly before the Siege of Snake Mount, cut his hair into a war mohawk and had a number of tattoos engraved on his head. These tattoos depicted the ironborn's defeat in the War of Conquest by Aegon the Conqueror. The tattoos also depicted the Siege of Pyke and showed the northmen conquering the ironborn. Lucas engraved these on his head to mock the ironborn on how they continuously have been defeated in battle through history.

"If you send anyone else to Snake Mount, or if you breathe one word of this incident to anyone, I'll cut your tongue from your head and eat it. But hopefully, we can move past this ugly incident and you'll hopefully never see me again, Lord Bracken."
―Lucas threatens Jonos Bracken.[src]
"There is an idea of a Lucas Dragen; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there."
―Lucas Dragen, about himself
"I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip."
―Lucas's thoughts after he kills the bow hunter
"Lucas: Why do you think he removes their skins, Lady Manderly?
[sarcastically]
Lucas: Enthrall me with your acumen.
Wylla Manderly: It excites him. Most murderers keep some sort of trophies from their victims.
Lucas: I didn't.
Wylla Manderly: No. No, you ate yours.
"
―Lucas Dragen and Wylla Manderly, on Ramsay Bolton
"A robin red-breast in a cage, puts all of the Seven Heavens in a rage. Think to yourself that every day is your last. The hour to which you do not look forward will come as a welcome surprise. As for me, when you want a good laugh, you will find me in fine state... fat and sleek, a true hog of the herd."
―Lucas welcomes his guests at his annual dinner feast.
"Lady Wells: Lucas, confess...What is this divine looking plate you have prepared for us?
Lucas: If I tell you...I'm afraid you won't even try it.
"
―Lady Wells at Lucas' dinner feast
Larinna: "If you didn't kill him, then who did?"
Lucas: "Who can say. Best thing for him, really. His mental state was going nowhere."
— Lucas and Larinna Harrigon
Ethan Dragen: "I need your opinion now."
Lucas: "Then here's one... you stink of fear under those cheap clothes. You stink of fear Ethan, but you're not a coward. You fear me, but still you came here. You fear the Boltons, yet still you seek them out. Don't you understand, Ethan? You exposed me because we're very much alike. Without our imaginations, we'd be like all those other poor... dullards. Fear... is the price of our instrument. But I can help you bear it."
— Ethan Snow and Lucas Dragen
"All good things to those who wait."
―Lucas Dragen
"Shh. Don't move. You're in shock now. I don't want you to feel any pain. In a moment, you'll begin to feel light-headed, then drowsy. Don't resist, it's so gentle, like slipping into a warm bath. I regret it came to this, my friend, but every game must have its ending."
―Lucas after he stabs Ser Willas
"On a similar note I must confess to you, I'm giving very serious thought...to eating your wife. "
―Lucas, to Lord Holt
"People will say we're in love. "
―Lucas, to Larinna
Ramsay Bolton: "I might not have time. "
Lucas: "I do. I have oodles. "
— Ramsay Bolton and Lucas
"You will not persuade me with appeals to my intellectual vanity. "
―Lucas to Ramsay Bolton
"That bastard bitch has the audacity to try and kill ME?! I dearly hope she doesn't have plans to encounter me again, because if she does, one of us won't be leaving that encounter alive, and it certainly won't be me."
―Lucas after surviving the attempt on his life by Sarina Waters.
Lucas: "Tell me Larinna, would you ever say to me "Stop. If you loved me, you'd stop"? "
Larinna Harrigon: "Not in a thousand years. "
Lucas: ""Not in a thousand years"... That's my girl. "
— Lucas and Larinna
"Ethan: I'm having a hard time thinking...I think I'm losing my mind...I...I don't know what's real...
Lucas: It is the year 302 after Aegon's Landing. You're in Snake Mount, the North and your name is Ethan Snow.
Ethan: I DON'T CARE WHO I AM! Tell me...If he's real...
Lucas: Who do you see, Ethan?
Ethan: Timos Crakehall...Who do you see?
Lucas: I don't see anyone.
Ethan: No...he's right there!
Lucas: There's no one there, Ethan.
Lucas: No...no...You're lying...
Lucas: You came here alone, don't you remember?
Ethan: Please don't lie to me!
Lucas: Timos Crakehall is dead. We killed him, you watched him die.
Ethan: WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME?!
Lucas: Ethan, you're having another seizure. I want you to hand me your sword. Ethan, I want you to hand me your...Ethan? [quiet] Ethan?
[Lucas grabs Ethan's sword and puts it on the table, with Ethan having some sort of epileptic attack.]
Lucas: [to Grond] He has had a mild seizure.
Grond: That doesn't seem to bother you.
Lucas: I said it was mild.
"
―Conversation between Ethan and Lucas, where Ethan is having a mental breakdown.
Barden Frey: "I guess now you wish you would've fed the rest of me to the dogs. "
Lucas: "No, Barden, I much prefer you the way you are. "
— Lucas and Barden's second encounter
"Have you seen blood in the moonlight? It appears quite black."
―Lucas
Lucas: "I would apologize for my analytical ambush, but I know I will soon be apologizing again and you'll tire of that eventually, so I have to consider using apologies sparingly."
Ramsay Bolton: "You just keep your "apologies" to yourself."
Lucas: "Or we could socialize, like adults. Gods forbid we become friendly."
Ramsay Bolton: "I don't find you that interesting."
Lucas: "You will."
— Lucas Dragen and Ramsay Bolton
"Are you by any chance trying to trace my whereabouts, you naughty girl? "
―Lucas on Sarina Waters
"Your job is to craft my doom, so I am not sure how well I should wish you. But I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun. Ta-ta, "L." "
―Content from a letter sent by Lucas to Sarina Waters
Sarina: "You're a vile piece of shit."
Lucas: "And you're a bastard bitch. What's the point you're trying to make?"
— Exchange between Lucas and Sarina Waters.
Braavosi nobleman: "Lord Oderah, do you believe a man could become so obsessed with a woman, from a single encounter? "
Lucas: "Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for her and find nourishment in the very sight of her? I think so. But would she see through the bars of his plight and ache for him? "
— Lucas, disguised as Thorodos Oderah, mentions his former wife, Larinna Harrigon
"Bowels in or bowels out?"
―Lucas
"Lucas Dragen: Have you met my friend Barden Frey?
Wylla Manderly: Yes
Lucas Dragen: Face to face, so to speak?
Wylla Manderly: Face to face
Lucas Dragen: Attractive, isn't he?
"
―Lucas to Wylla Manderly
"Look for severe childhood disturbances associated with violence. Our Ramsay wasn't born a killer, Wylla. He was made one through years of systematic abuse. Ramsay hates his own identity, you see, and he wants to prove himself. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying."
―Lucas Dragen on Ramsay Bolton
"Ramsay Bolton: What's this that I'll be putting in my mouth?
Lucas: Rabbit.
Ramsay: Should've hopped faster.
Lucas: [Grinning] He should've.
"
―Ramsay Bolton and Lucas at dinner.
"I've seen horrors... horrors that you haven't seen. And that gives you no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that... but you have no right to judge me. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror... Horror has a face... and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies! I remember, seventeen years ago, I went hunting with Snake Mount's Master-at-Arms. We got separated when we were attacked by two stags. Large ones. The Master-at-Arms was killed, and I was severely wounded, but I persevered, I kept moving. But I was hungry, I was starving and I needed to eat. And there was my salvation; a hunter dining on a freshly killed rabbit. But he had no desire to share it with me, not even when I begged him a thousand times. So I attacked him. I did what I had to do. I crippled his legs with his own knife. And while he was trying to crawl away, that was when I finally struck. As I mauled and slashed at him, hearing his muffled screams, that was when I ate him. And I remember... I... I... I cried, I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out; I didn't know what I wanted to do! And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it... I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was cut... like I was cut with a diamond... a diamond knife right across my neck. And I thought, by the Gods... the genius of that! The genius! The will to do that! Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And now I realize that there is no justice on this world. No hope, no retribution, nothing. You people despise me because I am honest about the things that I do and what I do, I do because I can. But these other people, who rule these lands, they are also monsters. But they are monsters, with a conscience. And something like that, is far more frightening than I could ever be. "
―A monologue of Lucas, to Larinna
"Grond: M'lord, the Brewlans come with an urgent message.
Lucas: What's the message?
Grond: Rickard Harrigon is rallying his forces, he plans to attack Snake Mount.
Lucas: Finally...
Grond: How should we proceed?
Lucas: If Harrigon crosses The Neck, kill his sister.
"
―Lucas, to Grond
"Lucas Dragen: You, girl...you're Arya Stark?
Arya Stark: That's right.
Lucas Dragen: I thought all the Starks were dead. Killed at a wedding by a man they thought was a friend.
Arya Stark: How do you know about that?
Lucas Dragen: Oh, I have my sources.
Arya Stark: Once I return to Westeros, the first thing I'm going to do is pay a visit to the man that hosted that wedding.
Lucas Dragen: Walder Frey?
Arya Stark: Yes.
[Lucas begins laughing.]
Arya Stark: Have I said something funny?
Lucas Dragen: If you're visiting the Late Lord Frey, you should know...he likes his pies.
[Arya smirks and nods.]
"
―Lucas, disguised as Thorodos Oderah, encounters Arya Stark.[src]
"Dear Larinna, The last few months have been very exciting. I've met so many new people, including your father, the late Lord Harrigon. My deepest condolences, of course. Your brother's determination to see me hang have also been quite amusing. Shameful, but amusing. And let us not forget my bastard uncle's rise from the dead. His ruthless love for his wife almost makes me shed tears. Of course, as you already know, I am quite the wicked person. Emotional attachments are nothing for me, they just slow and bore the process of my inevitable death. But I digress. Unfortunately, after the great Lord Ethan drove me away from my home, it feels as if a piece inside of me has perished. For days I've been searching for that one piece. And now, I've found it. That piece, was you. As you doubtlessly know, I am no longer in Westeros. Now that Ethan, your brother, my sister, "The Raven", Lord Grayburn, and the Lannisters are pursuing me, I have no real reason to stick around in this dreadful place anymore. No doubt, half of Westeros wants to see my head on a spike. I don't blame them, I became very popular the last few years. Don't bother trying find me, Larinna, I won't stay in Braavos for long. Tomorrow, I'll spread my unfathomable influence across the most eastern side of Essos; The Shadow Lands. A place where none of those dullards back home can find me. I can rest, and continue my spree of terror. This is where I say my final goodbye. I hope you haven't forgotten the conversation we had prior to my uncle's resurrection. You know what I mean. Take good care of Warron and Melina, they're always in my thoughts. As are you. Goodbye. Lucas."
―Lucas's letter to Larinna, supposedly his final words before departing to the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai
"Bran....Stark?"
―Lucas' final words after being killed by Jaqelos Eranelion, seeing a vision of him as he is dying.
"The Master: You! What have you done? I trusted you! We trusted you!
Sarina Waters: It's over, Grond. Your master is dead.
The Master: Wha... What?!
["Lucas" steps in]
Lucas: Your evil has claimed the lives of many good men. No longer.
The Master: What has he done to you? Snap out of it!
Lucas: I do not care about you. Never did. All shall beckon to this day, all shall now that I am not so easily beaten!
The Master: No! Wait!
Lucas: You shall know who I am! My name is Lucas Dragen...
The Master: Sarina! NO!
Lucas Dragen: AND I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!
"
―Sarina Waters kills the Master, believing she is Lucas
"You'll be free. You'll be under guard. Read these at your leisure. Don't lose them. Don't try to escape, you'll be killed. We can talk of these things later."
―Lucas Dragen releases Jaqelos Eranelion
"Lucas: (Reading) "Shape without form, shade without color, force, gesture without motion;"
Gaige: (To Jaqelos) Do you know what the man's saying? Do you?
Lucas: "Those who have crossed direct eyes..."
Gaige: This is dialectics. It's very simple dialectics. It's one through fractions. You can't travel in someone's mind. You can't go out into the void, without like, you know, with fractions. What are you gonna land on? One quarter? Three-eighths? What are you gonna do when you go from here to the Iron Islands? That's dialectics, okay? Dialectic logic is, there's only love and hate. You either love somebody, or you hate them!
Lucas: (Throws bananas at Gaige) Mutt! You mutt!
Gaige: This is the way the fucking world lives. Look at this fucking pigshit we're in! Not with a bang, Whimper. And with a whimper I'm fucking splitting, Jaqelos.
"
―Lucas, Gaige, and Jaqelos Eranelion
"Lucas: Where are you from, Eranelion?
Jaqelos: Tyrosh, my lord.
Lucas: Were you born there?
Jaqelos: Yes, my lord.
Lucas: Whereabouts?
Jaqelos: Silver Alley, my lord.
Lucas: How far are you from the tower?
Jaqelos: The Bleeding Tower?
Lucas: Uh-huh.
Jaqelos: About 30 miles.
Lucas: I went to see Tyrosh when I was a boy - some kind of pilgrimage most children in my family had to take. There's this building, must've been a temple, where there stands this statue of a three-headed deity. I found it menacing, but intriguing in a way. Have you considered any real freedoms? Freedoms from the opinions of others. Even the opinions of yourself. Did they say why, Eranelion, why they want to have me killed?
Jaqelos: I was sent on a secret quest, my lord.
Lucas: It's not longer secret, is it? Did they tell you?
Jaqelos: They told me that you have gone totally insane, and that your methods have become unsound.
Lucas: Are my methods unsound?
Jaqelos: I don't see any methods...at all... my lord.
Lucas: I expected someone like you. What did you expect? Are you an assassin?
Jaqelos: I'm a soldier.
Lucas: You're neither. You're an errand boy, sent by alleyway merchants, to collect a payment.
"
―Lucas' first encounter with Jaqelos Eranelion
"The horror... the horror..."
―Lucas' final words

Spoken about Lucas[]

"Alise: Run now, Mira, You need to leave.
Mira: But...Snake Mount is my home.
Alise: I can keep Lucas in control for only so long. You must leave Snake Mount. Go to my father. He will look after you, and take Domeric with you.
"
―Alise Dragen to her daughter, Mira Dragen
"You'd rather want to die than fall into the hands of that beast alive."
―Bolton soldier to his men
"Believe me, you don't want Lucas Dragen inside your head."
―Roose Bolton
Barden Frey: "So what do ya think, Walder? Does Dragen want to fuck her or kill her or eat her alive?"
"Black" Walder Rivers: "Probably all three, though I wouldn't want to predict in what order."
— Barden Frey and Walder Rivers, discussing Lucas and Larinna
"He's not collecting body parts. He's eating them."
―Ethan Dragen
"There is a sinister, darker side to him which I find greatly irresistible. He is unlike any man."
―Minella Ryswell
"I've heard stories about him. Disgusting rumours. I've heard he practices cannibalism. Now I have no clue if they're true or not, but if they are, there's no way in any of the Seven Hells that'd I'd let a man like that advise me."
Carmine Grayburn
"Be careful when dealing with Lucas Dragen, Carmine. He's unstable to the core. Not on the same level as the Mad King, but close. I know you've heard the stories about him. We all have. But it goes deeper than that....you don't become a person like that unless you've experienced true horrors in your past, horrors that neither you nor I could even fathom...."
Hendrick Grayburn to his son, implying that he knows about Lucas' traumatic past.
Larinna Harrigon: "[Lucas has escaped] He won't come after me"
Ethan Dragen: "Oh really?"
Larinna Harrigon: "He won't. I can't explain it... He - he would consider that rude."
— Ethan Dragen and Larinna Harrigon
"Barden Frey: The good lord approached me with a piece of broken mirror. "Try this,"
Lucas Dragen: Try peeling off your face...
Barden Frey:... and feeding it to the dogs.
"
―Barden Frey telling his story to Wylla Manderly
"The little boy Lucas died out in that snow. What he is now, there's no word for it. "
―Ethan Dragen
"You were an incredibly silent child. From the day you were born until...the earliest you can remember, you never cried nor screamed. I remember, when the wet nurses retrieved you from your mother, you did not move or make a noise. "He is dead", the nurses cried out. You were nothing but a lump of meat, held together by a pair of bones. That was until I held you. I grabbed you, put my hand on your chest, and there it was; a heartbeat. A calm, little heartbeat, followed by the inhales and exhales of fresh air. And you looked at me, and then you slept, like nothing happened. You escaped death, only seconds after you were born. You are Lucas of the noble House of Dragen. And you are my son. "
Garth Dragen, to Lucas.
"Why? Why would a nice lad like you want to kill a prodigy like him, huh? You know that the man really likes you. He likes you, he really likes you. He's got something in mind for you. Aren't you curious about that? I'm curious, I'm very curious. You curious? There's something happening out there, man. You know something, I know something that you don't know. That's right, Jaqelos. The man is clear in his mind, but his soul is... sick. Oh yes. He's dying, I think. He hates all this, he hates it! But... the man's... uh... he reads poetry out loud, alright?... And a voice! A voice... He likes you because you're still alive. He's got plans for you. No, no, I'm not going to help you, you're going to help him. You're going to help him. I mean, what are they going to say when he's gone, huh? Because he dies, when it dies, when it dies, he dies. What are they going to say about him? What, are they going to say, he was a kind man, he was a wise man, he had plans, he had wisdom? Horseshit! Am I going to be the one, that's going to set them straight? Look at me: wrong!...You!"
Gaige about Lucas to Jaqelos Eranelion
"He's back. The Red Dragon has returned..."

In the books[]

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Lucas Dragen is Garth Dragen's son. He is handsome, well-build, and has a sinisterly charming personality. Lucas is a cannibalistic psychopath, serial killer, and a master manipulator. He is calculating, calm, extremely intelligent and thoroughly enjoys playing mind games with his victims.

He does not fit any known psychological profile, though Maester Vahaelor classifies him as a "pure sociopath". However, unlike subjects with sociopathy, Lucas does not exhibit pleasure from killing, which would have resulted in an accelerated heart-rate. This was shown when Lucas viciously attacked a cleaner, and his heart-rate was noted to have never exceeded 85 beats per minute. Lucas simply described himself as being evil, stating that psychiatry is "puerile", and wrong to categorize different kinds of evil as different behavioral conditions. Lucas then supported this by stating that the inconsistencies in his behavior were traits of pure evil, and that he did not possess a behavioral abnormality.

Lucas also appears in Sansa's POV storyline in the sixth book, The Winds of Winter, where Lucas tries to lure Sansa to Snake Mount to manipulate her. He fails to do so, because of his eventual banishment from Snake Mount. In the books, Lucas' whereabouts after his banishment are ultimately unknown and his voyage into the Shadow Lands are simply theories.

In the books, Lucas was scarred on his left eye after a fight with Larinna Harrigon. This forced him to wear a dark-grey eyepatch as a result. In the show, no such event takes place.

Trivia[]

  • Lucas is the main protagonist in LordOfTheNeverThere' short story: Lord of the Hunt and its cancelled predecessor, Waking the Demon.
  • Lucas is a polyglot, being fluent in multiple languages including High and Low Valyrian.
  • Lucas's personal steed is called "Ruin".
  • Lucas's has a pair of twin blades which he calls "Keening" and "Sunder".
  • Lucas is based primarily on Hannibal Lecter and Count Dracula. However, Lucas is also loosely based on Ramsay Snow, Roose Bolton, Will Graham, Hugh Glass, Ragnar Lodbrok, Ívar the Boneless, serial killer Dr. Alfredo Ballí Treviño and Tom Riddle.
  • Lucas is left-handed.
  • As a child, Lucas suffered from a minor spectrum of autism, which could have stimulated his psychopathic behaviour which he developed later on.
  • Lucas is colour-blind.
  • According to LordOfTheNeverThere, the creator of Lucas Dragen, he had planned three possible endings to Lucas's storyline. One of them involved with Lucas becoming infected with the Crippling Decay disease, a sub-plot which was eventually adopted by Steffon Blackgard. Another possible ending, was that Lucas would be arrested and convicted for murder in King's Landing. The third ending involved with Lucas being burned alive by Vurus in order to revive Ethan Snow.
  • Lucas's first name is very uncommon in Westeros. As far as anyone knows, he is the only one who possesses this name. It was later explained by Alise Dragen that Lucas's name actually originates from the free city of Kogath in Essos. It is believed that Lucas was named after the legendary "Lucas of Kogath", a warlord and one of the greatest military commanders to have ever lived.
  • Lucas is also loosely based upon Armin Meiwes, a real-life German cannibal who became infamous for voluntary consuming the penis of his lover. Meiwes' story itself sparked a multitude of adaptations including, but not limited to, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, and the movie Cannibal.
