King Daveth Baratheon, popularly called "the Oathkeeper", is the Lord of Storm's End, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands and head of House Baratheon. He was the eighteenth king to sit on the Iron Throne and the second of the Baratheon dynasty, formally styled as Daveth of the House Baratheon, the First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm.
Following his father's death in a hunting accident, Daveth formally ascended the Iron Throne and enacted a series of reforms. During his nearly three-year reign, he repaid the crown's debts to the Iron Bank of Braavos and kept the peace between the Great Houses of the realm. After defeating his uncle Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater, however, he soon found himself engaged in a power struggle with his mother Cersei Lannister and put an enormous strain on his body as he moved to counter her egotistical agenda. He fell seriously ill due to exhaustion and died without issue not long afterwards. At some point after his brother (in reality, half-brother) Joffrey was poisoned at his wedding feast, Daveth was brought back to life by the red priestess Vaeraleah and traveled to Storm’s End to build an army in the hopes of rebuilding House Baratheon. After gaining the support of the Stormland houses, he quickly established a strong foothold in the region under the alias of Kieran.
After his youngest brother Tommen committed suicide in the wake of the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor, Daveth was declared Storm King by his bannermen and made his return to the world known. He initially plotted to remove Cersei from power but instead entered into an alliance with his friends Jon Snow, Castifer Stark and Daenerys Targaryen in the coming war against the Night King's forces. When a truce was declared with the Lannisters after presenting a wight as proof that the White Walkers were real, Daveth pledged himself and his army to Daenerys and acts as one of her generals in campaign to take the Iron Throne. After the Great War, Daveth started having doubts about Daenerys's sanity, believing she had inherited the famed "Targaryen madness"; he soon garnered a seething resentment against her after witnessing the devastation of King's Landing and the deaths of tens to hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, leading to him angrily renounce his allegiance. After the Battle of King's Landing, Daveth decides not to remain and instead joins Sansa in the newly independent kingdom in the North as her consort.
Daveth and his legitimized bastard half-brother Gendry are the sole remnants of House Baratheon's bloodline following the death of King Robert, the massacre of Robert's other bastards, and the deaths of Robert's brothers Renly, Stannis, and Stannis's daughter Shireen.
Biography
Background
Daveth is the firstborn son of Queen Cersei Lannister, and the only one of her children actually fathered by her lawful husband, King Robert I Baratheon, making him the only trueborn child of both parents. He was born at some point after the Sack of King’s Landing when his maternal uncle Ser Jaime Lannister infamously stabbed King Aerys II Targaryen in the back. Just moments after his birth, Daveth struggled with a fever that almost claimed his life. Miraculously, he survived the ordeal, much to the relief of his mother.
Daveth has black hair and takes after his father in terms of looks. Nobles and commoners alike regarded him as calm, patient, well-educated and insightful. He had three younger siblings (in reality, half-siblings): Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen. While he was fond of Myrcella and Tommen, however, it is known that Daveth has a negative relationship with his brother Joffrey and regularly berates him for his arrogance, sadistic behaviour and incompetent nature. Daveth has been best friends with Castifer Stark and Robb Stark since they were children.
As a child, Daveth learned how to rule from both his grandfather Tywin Lannister and Jon Arryn. When he was a teenager, he was sent to Casterly Rock alongside Castifer Stark to be fostered by Lord Tywin which was where he learned how to rule, after some couple of years, He travels back to King's Landing along with Castifer, Robb and by his request, Jon where they were fostered for another couple of years. He squired for his mentor Ser Barristan Selmy of the Kingsguard, one of the most skilled fighters in all of Westeros. Because Robert was more interested in drinking, whoring and hunting than ruling his kingdom, Daveth often represented his father on the Small Council and presided over the meetings alongside Lord Arryn. Rumors began to circulate that it was Daveth who really ruled the kingdoms in practice if not in name. Greatly irritated with Robert's habits of abuse towards Cersei and infidelities, Daveth swore to not be a man like his father and instead walk his own path.
Eight years before the start of the series Daveth witnessed the Greyjoy Rebellion firsthand at Lannisport, an event which shook him to his core when he watched the ironborn cut down his friends in front of him before being taken prisoner, in which he was routinely tortured by Euron Greyjoy on the Iron Islands for half a year before finally being rescued by Ser Barristan. Due to the trauma he endured during his captivity, according to Grand Maester Pycelle, when the crown prince returned to King's Landing he no longer smiled and became emotionally withdrawn and detached. In his later years, he grew more serious in his duties and trained to become a skilled warrior in his own right, distinguishing himself at tournaments (although he seldom entered the lists) and was knighted at sixteen. Daveth showed such great promise as a highly capable administrator and military commander with a reputation for achieving efficient yet effective results in a short amount of time without reneging his word. As such, he is known throughout the Seven Kingdoms as the "Oathkeeper." This caused a tense rift to develop between Robert and Daveth and the two became estranged. The royal court soon divided into two rival factions between those who supported Daveth and had the good of the realm in mind and opportunistic sycophants who supported Robert who felt increasingly threatened by his eldest son's growing power and influence.
Season 1
Prince Daveth, 17, accompanies his parents to Winterfell and is betrothed to marry Lord Eddard Stark’s eldest daughter Sansa Stark as part of King Robert’s plan to unite House Baratheon to House Stark by blood. Sansa appears happy with the prospect, while Daveth seems rather nonchalant but remains polite towards Sansa.[2] Daveth also shared initial greetings with his best friends, Castifer Stark, Robb Stark and Jon Snow. They spent their time in the Godswood of Winterfell talking about all the things they have missed and would like to do together in the future as well as King Robert's plan to marry him to Sansa to which Castifer, Robb and Jon found amusing while Daveth rolled his eyes.

He expressed his sympathy towards Lady Catelyn when her son Brandon Stark falls from a tower and suffered severe injuries, offering his prayers for the boy’s survival and health. After spending a month in Winterfell, the royal party prepares to set out for King’s Landing, accompanied by Eddard, Castifer, Sansa and Arya. While on the Kingsroad, Daveth is seen walking with Sansa and stumbles upon her sister Arya practising sword play with a commoner, Mycah along with Castifer doing some fishing in the nearby river. Daveth is amused by what he sees, even providing some basic tips on proper swordplay and being lenient to Mycah about getting caught mingling with a noble girl ― much to Mycah's relief and helping Castifer catch a dozen fish with Castifer's own pike named "Greypoint" much to Castifer's dismay. However, this moment is ruined when Daveth's younger brother Joffrey shows up unannounced and starts berating Castifer for fishing and tormenting Mycah, who is too scared to move and slices his face with his sword. Daveth warns Joffrey to stop and Castifer tries to treat Mycah, but Arya angrily hits Joffrey instead insisting that the butcher's boy escape of which he did. When Joffrey turns his sights on Arya and threatens her, Daveth is forced to disarm and physically restrain his brother while Castifer fights back for his sister verbally, calling him a "right numpty" and "self-righteous slag". Before he is able to escort Joffrey away, they are both knocked down by Arya's direwolf Nymeria who attacks Joffrey in defence of her mistress, mauling Joffrey's right arm in the process as Arya throws his sword in the river, all the while ignoring Castifer's protests. As Joffrey begs for his life, Daveth coldly calls him a fool for starting the incident while Castifer cleans and treats him with medicinal oil. Later, he is summoned to testify about what had occurred. Daveth immediately realizes that Joffrey lied about the incident which he claims he was attacked in an unprovoked manner. King Robert knows Joffrey is lying as well and was heavily disgusted that Joffrey was disarmed by a girl, but agrees to forget about the incident in return of Nymeria's death of which Arya and Castifer heavily opposed along with Daveth's disapproval of his father's barbaric terms. When she cannot be found, Sansa's direwolf Lady is executed instead. In King's Landing, Daveth speaks with his mentor and friend Ser Barristan Selmy and Castifer about the current state of affairs as his brother's injuries are being tended to. He mentions his plans to bring about many changes at court but acknowledges that he is only one man and would call upon people like Barristan and Castifer for help one day. The old knight and young lad agree to lend Daveth their support once that day comes but urges caution in the meanwhile. Daveth says he understands and leaves to oversee trade negotiations with Braavosi merchants.[3] Eddard Stark discovers that Daveth is the only trueborn son of King Robert, by examining the family history and realizing that black hair is a dominant trait in the Baratheon line. Eddard realizes that Joffrey doesn't share this trait as he has blonde hair instead which concludes that he is not one of King Robert's biological children and his true parentage can be attributed to the incestuous relationship between his mother and his "uncle" Jaime Lannister. Meanwhile, Daveth wins Sansa's affection as he vows to protect her from any and all who would harm her.[4]
When King Robert I Baratheon was mortally wounded in a hunting accident, he talks to Daveth and Joffrey on his deathbed and eventually says he could have been a better father. Sometime after this, Daveth secretly acquires Castifer's pike and brought it to a smith for it to be upgraded to Valyrian steel.
Daveth ascends to the Iron Throne and begins making preparations for his coronation. He meets with Castifer before the coronation and expresses how he did not expect to be king like this to which Castifer replied by telling him that Ser Barristan Selmy and him along with his father, Eddard will be right by his side during his reign, Castifer replies by giving him a brotherly hug. Eddard acknowledges Daveth as king and bends the knee along with his son, Castifer. He then presents a proclamation from Robert making him Lord Regent and Protector of the Realm, but before Cersei could tear up the document Daveth demands to see it himself. After reading it, he acknowledges his late father's will and allows him to serve until his upcoming nameday to Cersei's chagrin. Eddard expects Lord Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish and Commander Janos Slynt of the City Watch to enforce the Oathkeeper's authority, and they do so. Refusing to influenced by his mother, Daveth chooses to retain Ser Barristan and presents him with a gift on behalf of the royal court: a sword forged from Valyrian steel in honor of the old knight's eighteen years of service as Lord Commander, known as the "Bastion". Barristan is moved by this act, and accepts the gift. Daveth also presents Castifer with a Valyrian steel modified version of his pike, Greypoint, for Castifer's loyalty to Daveth and his promise to stand by his side. When Cersei asks her son why he decided to keep an old man around instead of replacing him with Jaime, Daveth points out that a Kingsguard serves for life and that simply dismissing one of its members on a whim is not legally permitted; he also cites that passing down the rank of Lord Commander onto his uncle would only be seen as an unprecedented act of favoritism.[5] In private, Eddard tells Daveth what he discovered about the rumors surrounding Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen. Daveth is understandably disturbed that neither of his siblings actually shared the same father as him and have no claim to the Iron Throne. Regardless, he tells Eddard that he will personally take care of the situation as discreetly as possible so long as Eddard doesn't do anything reckless that would be problematic.
Days later, Daveth continues to hold court. Marillion sings a song he wrote about King Robert and Queen Cersei, which includes lyrics saying that the boar may have disemboweled Robert, but the "lion in his bed" (the Lannister's sigil is a lion) was the one who tore his balls off. Daveth is visibly displeased by the song and perceives it as an insult against his parents. He warns Marillion that if he ever hears that song again, he will have the minstrel's tongue ripped out with hot pincers and has his guards escort him out. Daveth walks with Sansa out of the courtroom and he states to her that plans for the royal wedding are underway and will proceed once Sansa has had her blood. They arrive at the castle's Godswood overlooking the Blackwater Rush and share a brief moment.
Sansa excitedly asks him about their wedding, but he instructs her to be patient, as she still has much to learn about court intrigue. Then Daveth gives her a flower, and says that the best and brightest roses often blooms brighter than any other if properly tended to and compares it to grooming a queen fit for a king, prompting her to reply: "I hope I don't prove a disappointment to you." Daveth looks at her, saying Sansa hasn't disappointed him yet but reminds her that the potential is there - for both sides.
He later asks Petyr Baelish and Varys to begin his first small council meeting.[6]
Season 2
Daveth rules wisely and well, managing to pay off the Crown's massive debts to the Iron Bank of Braavos and most to his grandfather Tywin Lannister with the help of Ser Barristan Selmy and Castifer Stark. During his eighteenth nameday celebration, Eddard Stark steps down from the regency and transfers full power and authority to Daveth, thereby securing Daveth's hold on the Iron Throne. The king holds a tourney with his family in attendance, also naming Ser Dontos Hollard as his new fool as punishment for showing up drunk (although would have had stripped him of his knighthood if not for Sansa's intervention, who asked her betrothed to show mercy on a man on one's nameday).

Rumors begin to circulate about his siblings' parentage and he confronts his mother, Queen Mother Cersei Lannister with them. He mentions he's well aware about the existence of King Robert Baratheon's bastard children and reassures her that he will not be the kind of man his father was. Although Cersei was tempted to slap him, she refrains from doing so after hearing her son's words. At some point, Joffrey somehow arranges for a city-wide massacre of the bastards, causing civil unrest in the capital.[7] Daveth, Eddard, Castifer and Tyrion Lannister responded by exiling Janos Slynt to the Wall, yet Eddard voiced his disapproval when Daveth chose to heed Tyrion's counsel and appointed Bronn as the replacement Commander of the City Watch instead of his son, Castifer.[8] He later confronted Joffrey and demanded an explanation. When Joffrey retorts that he can do whatever he wishes, Daveth furiously chides him for his act of malicious cruelty and disinherits Joffrey, coldly reminding him that the mad king thought he could do whatever he wanted as well. After leaving, Daveth quietly begins setting his plans in motion to call for a Great Council.
Talking to Sansa, Daveth says he's been feeling rather exhausted and stressed as of late. She comforts him, promising to help him in any way she can. Daveth is grateful, though he does admit things will be a lot worse before they can get any better.
Daveth attends the departure of his sister Myrcella Baratheon to Dorne as part of a marriage alliance pact; he notices his little brother Tommen crying and reassures him that they will see her again, reacting with anger when Joffrey cruelly sneers at Tommen for crying. Daveth receives a report of trouble brewing at Dragonstone and the Reach, implying something must have happened. As he departs for the Red Keep, Daveth is met by a someone claiming to represent of the populace and informs the king that tensions are starting to rise as the people are both worried and hungry. While he attempts to reassure the citizens of King's Landing that he will do everything in his power to ease their fears, one onlooker throws some cow dung but misses Daveth and hits Joffrey instead, who foolishly triggers a city wide riot by petulantly ordering the Crown's heavily outnumbered guards to kill everyone in the crowd. He pushes his way past the riot under the protection of his Kingsguard, City Watch enforcers, Baratheon and Lannister soldiers but then angrily berates Joffrey in front of everyone for being a "vicious idiot". When he realizes Sansa has been lost in the chaos, Daveth commands Eddard, and Sandor "the Hound" Clegane to help him find her while telling Castifer to control the crowd of angry peasants and prevent them from doing any substantial damage.[9]
His plans are thrown into chaos when his uncles Stannis Baratheon and Renly Baratheon turn against him to lay claim to the Iron Throne after assuming that Daveth was also a bastard when they mysteriously received news of Joffrey and his siblings' bastardy along with reports of Balon Greyjoy's second uprising. While Eddard informs Daveth that his son Robb Stark will be occupied dealing with the ironborn incursion in the North, Tyrion Lannister arrives with word that Renly was assassinated by a mysterious figure after a failed parley and Stannis is sailing to King's Landing with a fleet of over 200 ships. Seeing that conflict was inevitable, Daveth and Joffrey prepare themselves for battle and are determined to fight personally, scaring their mother. Cersei suspects that Tyrion is encouraging her sons and plots to blackmail him into ensuring their safety by imprisoning his lover. Joffrey tours the sea wall of the city with Tyrion, Daveth and Castifer and insists that he will kill Stannis himself while Eddard says that they should take him prisoner. Daveth undercuts Joffrey's bravado and his woeful lack of appreciation of the danger they are in. He later informs Eddard that Castifer has sent for reinforcements to help defend the capital in case things take a turn for the worse.[10]
Daveth prepares for the Battle of the Blackwater, taking with him his Valyrian steel sword named "Stormbringer." He meets with Sansa in the Throne Room before going to the city walls, and tells her he will fight in the vanguard. He promises Sansa that he will return so long as she waits for him before the two share their first kiss. Daveth formulates a three-phase strategy to defend the city alongside Tyrion, much to the anger of Joffrey who remains frustrated at not knowing their plans.
The first phase is successful when Tyrion's wildfire explosion decimates Stannis' fleet. Daveth orders the second phase to begin when the size of the landing force that comes ashore to lay siege to the Mud Gate, but suffers a setback when sortie led by the Hound fails to drive the attackers back and quits the field rather than go back out. Ser Lancel Lannister arrives to tell Daveth and Joffrey that the Queen has ordered them back to the Red Keep, but Daveth firmly refuses while Joffrey cowardly withdraws. Standing alongside King Daveth are Tyrion, Eddard Stark, Castifer Stark, Ser Barristan Selmy, Ser Mandon Moore and Ser Boros Blunt of the Kingsguard. Daveth rallies the troops with a rousing speech and personally leads the vanguard to destroy Stannis' siege equipment. The counterattack is successful, but Daveth's forces are backed into corner when the bulk of Stannis' army arrive. Castifer arrives with a token force of Stark troops to aid Daveth but they were quickly backed into the corner as well. On their last legs, Daveth and Castifer is informed that reinforcements are on their way and the king tells his soldiers to hold the line to the very end. The two sides then clash. Daveth is wounded during the battle when his faced was slashed and received a scar which ran vertical above and below his right eye, but his life was saved when Eddard sacrificed himself to protect him, dying in the arms of Castifer. The battle was won by the arrival of a host of House Lannister, House Tyrell, House Stark and House Tully reinforcements arrive under Lord Tywin Lannister, Robb Stark and Ser Edmure Tully.[11]
Daveth is seen recovering with Robb's wife Talisa tending to his wounds, but couldn't bring himself to look Robb in the eye - recalling his Hand's heroic act during the battle. He sees Castifer overlooking the massacre, knowing fully well that he was thinking about Eddard Stark. Daveth wanted to console him but felt that Castifer needed time to fully process what happened. He is visited by Varys, Pycelle and Cersei. Varys informs Cersei of Daveth's leadership and strategies helped save the city, though Cersei bluntly remarks that she almost lost her first boy because of it. When she is pleased to declare the war over, Daveth retorts that the war is not over but has only just begun. Robb, Castifer, Sansa and Catelyn arrive to see Daveth and once left alone, a guilt-ridden Daveth informs them of Eddard's death apart from Castifer who already knows. All are devastated by the news and Daveth, with a determined look in his eyes, swears that he will find some way to honor Eddard yet predicts things will only get worse before they get better.
In the throne room, Daveth rewards Tywin by naming him Savior of the City. He also grants favor to House Tyrell, House Stark and House Tully for their aid by naming Castifer as the next Hand of the King, naming Robb the new Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell, agreeing to Ser Loras' request to unite their houses by marrying Joffrey to Margaery Tyrell as well as naming Edmure Tully the next Lord of Riverrun, Lord Paramount of the Trident and Guardian of the Riverlands in light of Lord Hoster's deteriorating health.[12]
Season 3
Daveth briefly overlooks docks following the Battle of the Blackwater, thinking about the people he has cared about over the last decade now long gone. He comes to a cynical conclusion that the world is a dark, cruel place to live in. Though Tyrion tries to cheer up his nephew, he finds it has become rather difficult than usual. Even so, Daveth knows what Tyrion is trying to do and silently nods to acknowledge his uncle's attempt. Later that night, he has dinner with Sansa Stark, her brothers Robb Stark and Castifer Stark, her mother Catelyn Stark and his mother Cersei Lannister. Cersei tells Sansa that the king barely survived the battle against Stannis, but Daveth remarks that he's endured much worse and points to his scars. He is also more protective of Sansa, much to Cersei's discomfort. It becomes clearer that Daveth is slowly growing more distant and less trusting of Cersei, no longer able to tolerate any interference on her part.[13]
He attends a meeting of the Small Council with his grandfather Tywin Lannister, though the meeting place has been relocated to the Tower of the Hand next to Tywin's quarters and is among the first to arrive. He glares at Petyr Baelish when he ambitiously attempted to sit at the second-closest seat to Tywin and motions him to sit down next to Varys, much to the eunuch's amusement. Daveth listens to Varys informing him of Lord Hoster Tully's death after news of it reached Edmure and Tywin arguing Baelish's title as Lord of Harrenhal in name only serves his purposes of courting Lysa Arryn, a name Daveth recognizes all too well. Tyrion brings up that this would leave the council without a Master of Coin and Tywin agrees with his son for once, prompting Daveth to appoint his uncle the new Master of Coin.[14]
Later that day, Daveth pays a visit to Sansa. He asks her how she has been doing as of late, considering recent events. Sansa answers honestly that she is still struggling to cope with her father's death, but reassures Daveth she will be alright. The two begin to talk about their impending wedding at the Great Sept of Baelor and Daveth confesses that he is actually looking forward to the day where he could proudly call Sansa his wife, and this thought makes Sansa happy.[15] Daveth and Sansa spend more time together in the following weeks, and two continue to grow closer.[16] Daveth also visits Castifer, consoling on Eddard's death, saying that he was one of the most honourable and brave men he has ever known. Castifer acknowledges Daveth and they agreed to a spar in the castle's training court.
At a breakfast celebration on his wedding day, Daveth receives various gifts. Among them, he is given a copy of a book entitled The Lives of Four Kings by his uncle Tyrion, a fur cloak by Robb and a portrait of both the late King Robert and Lord Eddard by Castifer.
In the Sept of Baelor, Daveth and Sansa are finally married, to much fanfare. Robb escorts his sister down the altar in place of their father. At the wedding feast, a band plays The Rains of Castemere; Daveth has them dismissed when he noticed Sansa's discomfort. Later, Dontos Hollard performs in front of the royal family. Once the entertainment is over, a big wedding pie arrives, which is cut by Daveth with Stormbringer, revealing doves hidden inside that burst forth and fly away. All is going well until a drunken Joffrey openly mocks his kingly brother which silences the attendants. Daveth is not amused and threatens to castrate Joffrey, leading to the King and Prince to glare at each other. Tywin quickly defuses the situation by telling Joffrey that his brother is tired. Taking the hint, Daveth takes a visibly relieved Sansa away to his bedchamber, where Daveth proceeds to officially consummate the marriage with Sansa. He is known as "The King in Winterfell" because of the marriage alliance between the Iron Throne and House Stark.[17] The following morning, Daveth and Sansa have formed a strong and loving marriage and are regularly seen in public together; with their relationship continuing to grow.
Things hit a snag, however, when Daveth unexpectedly became seriously ill due to the strain of built up stress of having to repeatedly halt his mother Cersei's egotistical plans of undermining his authority and collapsed in the middle of the throne room. Despite every attempt at healing him, Grand Maester Pycelle regretfully informs Cersei and Sansa that Daveth's health had drastically declined and is beyond saving. On his deathbed, Daveth sorrowfully expressed to Sansa his inability to protect people close to him and his end will soon be near. When Sansa tearfully begs Daveth to not leave her, he replies he doesn't want to leave either but doesn't have a choice. Before he dies, Daveth tells Sansa he loves her very much and makes her promise to stay alive for his sake. Not long afterwards, Daveth Baratheon, the second King of the Baratheon dynasty, passed away.
Daveth's funeral is held in the Great Sept of Baelor, which Cersei, Jaime Lannister, Sansa, Barristan Selmy, Joffrey, Tommen, Margaery Tyrell, Loras Tyrell, Tyrion Lannister and Tywin Lannister attend to pay their respects.[18] Cersei was devastated by the loss of her son. As the realm enters the appropriate period of mourning in the wake of the king's death, Daveth was mourned profusely by those who knew him; there are public displays of grief at his passing, and even his uncle Stannis Baratheon at Dragonstone acknowledged that his nephew's skills on the battlefield impressed him. Ser Barristan said he was proud to serve a king worthy of serving. Lord Tywin himself openly praised Daveth during his wake, openly admitting that despite their ideological differences his grandson was a good king.[18]
After Daveth's death his younger brother Joffrey succeeds him as king. He spurns the North and instigated the War of the Five Kings, greatly undoing his brother's legacy; however, one month into his reign Joffrey was poisoned at his own wedding.[19]
Season 4
At some point after his body was entombed (though not cremated) within the Great Sept's crypts, under unknown circumstances, Daveth's tomb was raided by a mysterious figure wearing a red hood in the middle of the night and his body was taken out of King's Landing. Cersei was later informed of this incident by Qyburn and could barely contain her fury, demanding that whoever is responsible for this to return her son's remains and calls for their execution.
Season 5
One year later, it is discovered that Daveth's body was moved to a remote location in the Riverlands — all whilst avoiding direct contact with Frey and Lannister soldiers on the Kingsroad. As the woman examines Daveth's body, Ser Lucius Blackmyre, who failed to carry out Daveth's orders and having recently been dismissed from the Kingsguard, had followed them and asked her to let the late king rest as she had disrespected the dead. She turns around and introduces herself as Vaeraleah, saying she has seen a vision of Daveth fighting alongside two others at Winterfell and it is the Lord of Light's will to bring him back from the grave, though Lucius remains adamant that Daveth is gone for good.
Vaerleah calmly replies that as a red priestess she knows a great deal of magic, including the power of resurrection. She mentions another priestess, though Vaerleah remarks that even other R'hllor priests often misinterpret and perverse the Lord of Light's teachings. She performs a ritual with Daveth's body, cleaning it, trimming his beard, and burning it in the fire, before placing both her hands over Daveth and calls on the Lord of Light to revive him. She chants in High Valyrian "Lord, cast your light upon this man. Lead his soul out of darkness, his flame was extinguished before his time. Bring this man back from darkness into light. From ashes, fire. From death, life!", and in a few long minutes, Daveth awakens, gasping for breath.[20]
Once he comes back to his senses, Daveth takes a moment to recognize his surroundings as Lucius and Vaerleah inform him of everything that has happened in his absence: civil war erupted, the realm has spiraled into chaos, his uncle Tyrion fled across the Narrow Sea, Stannis was defeated at the Battle of Winterfell, among many others. With the death of his uncle Stannis, Daveth is now the titular head of House Baratheon. He laments his perceived failure to act sooner, believing he could have stopped it from happening. But after some encouragement, Daveth gets dressed and prepares to head to King's Landing, though Vaerleah warns him he is not well enough to travel and, even if he does, the capital is far too dangerous right now. She reveals that Daveth's own mother Cersei Lannister had been conspiring against him from the very beginning and practically undid everything he worked so hard to achieve. Stunned by this revelation and feeling betrayed, Daveth finally lashes out and bitterly denounces Cersei. Ser Lucius advises Daveth to bide his time and keep his identity a secret and go under the alias of Kieran so no one knows who he is. Once he calms himself down, Daveth agrees and tells them to begin making preparations to go to the Stormlands instead.
Daveth remains angry at Cersei for her betrayal, declaring he wished he had called a Great Council to determine who should have been his heir. When they finally arrive at a nearly abandoned Storm's End, the group is halted by one of Renly Baratheon's former bannermen Lord Edgarth Mullendore who demands they turn around. Daveth, as "Kieran" refuses, and falsely introduces himself as a bastard son of a minor lord. Lord Mullendore expresses his skepticism of Daveth's claims and approaches to confirm his story, but is surprised when he notices a vertical scar on his left eye which gives away his true identity. Edgarth is surprised to learn of Daveth's identity and apologizes for not recognizing him sooner. Daveth dismisses Edgarth, saying "The people appear quick to ask forgiveness after failing to remember how fast they forgot about me." Other lords and knights appear and, failing to recognize him and labeling him a pretender, turn hostile and attack. Daveth and Lucius effortlessly fight off the soldiers. Daveth executes those who refuse to submit while sparing any who yielded.
Season 6
With the Stormlands firmly under his control, Daveth remarks the last time he visited Storm's End and its history. Vaerleah adds that so long as the Lannisters control the Iron Throne through his youngest bastard brother King Tommen I Baratheon the Seven Kingdoms will never be safe. Daveth assembles the remaining storm lords and reveals his true identity as the last known trueborn Baratheon alive, the "Baratheon" on the Irone Throne is indeed a bastard born of incest with no actual claim and reminding them of their oaths to House Baratheon.
He asserts that the Lannisters were primarily responsible for all that has happened to the people of the Stormlands, as well as their role in the deaths of Robert, Stannis, Renly... and himself. As all of the gathered lords of the Stormlands drew and raised their swords, together they agree to keep Daveth's identity a secret and hailed "Kieran" as the new Storm King.[21]
At some point, Daveth learns of Myrcella's death and is deeply saddened by her loss, privately mourning his younger sister ― even if she was a product of incest.[22] The following morning he receives a message from Lord Petyr Baelish at the Vale detailing Sansa Stark's daring escape from Winterfell to seek refuge Castle Black under Jon Snow's protection.[23] Daveth desperately wants to help Sansa but Ser Lucius and Lord Mullendore dissuades him from doing so, arguing that even if he were able, the Storm King still has not fully recovered following his resurrection and the Stormlands remain under siege by the Lannister forces. Daveth begrudgingly relents to this rationale, but decides to send a token force of 5,000 Storm knights to sail North and aid Sansa.[23]
Daveth and his forces were able to successfully repel an attack from the Lannisters, allowing themselves a reprieve. He later hears of Jon's decisive victory against House Bolton during the Battle of the Bastards and, once well enough, sailed North to Winterfell.[24] Upon his arrival, Daveth and Jon share a friendly banter that they thought the other were dead and how they returned from the dead albeit under different circumstances. Daveth later reunites with Sansa, and after a brief moment, they share a brief emotional reunion. He apologizes to Sansa for everything that has happened, but she cuts Daveth off and tells him there is nothing to forgive. She reaffirms her feelings to Daveth, but tells him she will need time to focus on herself for a while. Daveth says he understands if things will be different, though he still warns Sansa not to trust Littlefinger.[24]
When Jon Snow is declared King in the North at the Great Hall of Winterfell by the lords of the North and the Vale, Daveth and Jon agree to forge an alliance between the North and Stormlands to fight the White Walkers.[24]
Upon returning to Storm's End, Daveth shockingly learns of the Great Sept of Baelor's destruction and Tommen's suicide. Outraged, Daveth angrily chides his mother Cersei Lannister and vows to make her pay for her crimes.[24]
Season 7
Having fought off another wave of attacks from the Lannister-Tarly army, King Daveth orders his bannermen to conscript able-bodied men and women aged 10 to 60 combat training and reaffirm their loyalty to House Baratheon. Reflecting on his past mistakes, Daveth says that they can no longer afford the luxury of time as he expects a response from the Lannister forces and assigns Ser Lucius Blackmyre to personally oversee their training. After receiving a raven with a message from the newly-crowned Queen Cersei demanding that "Kieran" bend the knee, Daveth refuses to acknowledge to his mother's authority and burns the letter instead. He warns his bannermen not to underestimate Cersei as he knows her better than anyone else alive and haves them begin preparations to defend Storm's End by land and sea.[25]
In private, Daveth Baratheon, Edgarth Mullendore, and Camern Meadows discuss a letter they received from Tyrion Lannister, now serving as Hand to Daenerys Targaryen, to meet her on Dragonstone. While Edgarth suspects it to be forged so as to lure Daveth into a trap, Daveth believes the letter is genuine due to having a good relationship with his uncle and knows Tyrion is not like the other Lannisters he knew growing up as a child in King's Landing. When Camern mentions that Daenerys will be expecting both Daveth and Jon Snow’s arrival, Daveth’s bannermen vehemently argue against it, citing her father the Mad King and his late father Robert Baratheon's war to overthrow him. Daveth takes their opinions under advisement and promises to keep his guard up, but remains adamant in his decision, as King, to go with or without their approval and chooses to leave Edgarth in charge of ruling Storm’s End in his place while Lucius readies the Stormlands' army for war until he returns. He gives a farewell nod before joining his former Kingsguard knight Ariyana Dayne to Tarth, where they take a ship to Dragonstone.
Daveth and Ariyana arrive at Dragonstone and reunites with Jon — who is accompanied by Davos Seaworth and his half-brother Castifer Stark. Jon, Castifer and Daveth shared their hugs and introduction with Davos and Ariyana. The group are immediately greeted by Tyrion and Missandei. Tyrion is happy to see his nephew again while Daveth notes that his uncle had changed since the Battle of the Blackwater. Tyrion introduces Missandei, who requests that Daveth, Jon and Castifer surrender their weapons. They and their entourage hand over their weapons to Daenerys Targaryen's Dothraki guards.
On the walk to the castle, Tyrion talks to Daveth about the chain of events that occured in his absence: from Tyrion struggling to cope with Daveth's death, his marriage to Sansa, Joffrey's assassination, his trial, and lastly his escape to Essos. Tyrion assures Daveth his marriage to his nephew's widow at the time was an inappropriate sham and remarks that she is a lot smarter than she lets on, which Daveth agrees with Jon looking at the two. Daveth, Jon, Castifer, Davos and Ariyana are startled at the sight of Drogon and Viserion flying overhead and dive to the ground, while an amused Tyrion and Missandei maintain their composure and help them up, who say their mother is waiting for them within the castle while Castifer and Daveth were loudly cursing with pain from the fall.
Upon entering the throne room, Missandei introduces Queen Daenerys's many titles while Davos introduces Jon Snow simply as King in the North and Castifer as the former King in the North and current Lord of Winterfell as well as the head of House Stark. Ariyana introduces Daveth Baratheon as the Storm King, the head of House Baratheon and the former King of the Andals and the First Men. Daenerys thanks Daveth, Jon and Castifer for travelling so far but insists that Daveth and Jon are mere Lords. Davos and Ariyana beg to differ with Castifer sighing and loudly whispering that he knew "this shitshow of dominance and showing off" was starting to happen but Daenerys responds that there has been no King in the North or Storm King ever since Torrhen Stark bent the knee to Aegon the Conqueror and Argilac the Arrogant was slain in battle against Aegon's bastard half-brother Orys Baratheon and adds that an oath lasts for perpetuity to which Castifer strongly disagrees saying that his brother Robb Stark was the previous King in the North and that he was an honorable man to which Ariyana replied to Dany that she begs to differ that the last Storm King was Daveth. Dany then reiterates her demand for Daveth, Jon and Castifer to bend the knee but the trio refuse. When Dany accuses them of breaking faith with House Targaryen, Daveth rudely interrupts her by pointing out that her father the Mad King was a dangerously deluded, paranoid and evil man who demanded his father Robert Baratheon to be executed when he had done nothing wrong at the time. Jon and Castifer joins in by reminding her that the Mad King burnt their grandfather Rickard and uncle Brandon alive. Daenerys apologizes for her father's actions and stresses that children should not be punished for the crimes of their parents. She then urges Daveth, Jon and Castifer to renew the historic allegiance between their three great houses. They agree with Daenerys's view that children should not be punished for the crimes of their parents but Castifer argues that they are also not beholden to their ancestors' oaths. Jon and Castifer tell her that they had come for her help; Daveth replies that he only came because of Tyrion's invitation. Dany reminds them that she has three dragons and Dothraki who have pledged themselves to her to which Castifer replies that she doesn't have to tell them because they'd already seen her military force.
Getting to the point of their trip, Daveth came only because his uncle Tyrion asked him to and refuses to be cowed into submission; whilst Jon, on the other hand, likens the fighting between the Great Houses to children squabbling over a game along with Castifer joining in on the last second, reminding her that Daenerys didn't grow up in Westeros and that she doesn't know the full extent of the damage the War of the Five Kings has wrought and that Westeros doesn't need another war happening while its preparing for an entirely unique and foreign threat which are the White Walkers. Jon Snow points out that the Army of the Dead is their true enemy with Castifer supporting him. Daenerys is skeptical but Tyrion vouches for Jon and his nephew. Jon says that they need to make cause to fight against the Army of the Dead.
During the interchange, Daveth notices how Daenerys and Jon were exchanging looks and takes note of it. Daenerys asks Jon and Castifer if their father knew that his best friend King Robert had sent assassins to kill her as a baby, but was silenced again when Daveth vocally revealed that it was he who rescinded the order against her a long time ago, saying he allowed Dany to live because his spies reports indicated Dany did not possess any trace of the infamous Targaryen madness that had plagued her family for centuries and Castifer backlashes her point, stating that their late father, the honorable Lord Eddard Stark knew and was against the plan and tried preventing it from happening because she was only a child. In a way, Daveth spared her life and showed mercy so as to give her a second chance by redeeming House Targaryen. Dany recounts that she was targeted by assassins, enslaved, raped, and defiled but that her faith in herself rather the gods kept her going. Daenerys talks about the miracle of her dragons' hatching and the Dothraki crossing the Narrow Sea. When Daenerys reiterates that she is destined to rule the Seven Kingdoms, Daveth and Castifer retort that she will be ruling over a graveyard while Jon points out that the Night King is their true enemy.
Tyrion says they cannot split their forces. Davos and Ariyana then speak up for their kings and tells Dany that Jon united the Free Folk, the Northmen and even Valemen after thousands of years of bloodshed between them because of the White Walkers which were their common enemy as well as telling her that Jon was named Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and King in the North by his people while Ariyana supports Daveth, telling Daenerys that Daveth single-handedly eliminated an entire battalion of Lannister troops which were holding Stormlanders still loyal to House Baratheon as prisoners with only his top lieutenant Ser Robar Royce for help and that he too was also hailed as Storm King by his people not because of his birthrights. Castifer then adds in to the conversation, saying that King Stannis Baratheon believed the White Walkers existed and that Stannis' forces fought against the very creatures that Daenerys was claiming to only be folklore. They also mention that Jon Snow and Daveth Baratheon both came back from the dead, saying that it doesn't matter who bends the knee to which Jon and Daveth looked to their presenters with looks of vexation as they do not feel comfortable with telling strangers about how they were resurrected while Castifer looks on awkwardly. Tyrion doesn't see the point of Daveth's, Castifer's and Jon's refusal to submit. Daveth explains that he doesn't know Daenerys and doesn't trust her as Daenerys herself doesn't know either Daveth, Jon or Castifer. Castifer then disputes the fact that her claim to the Iron Throne lies solely on her father's name, one that their fathers fought to overthrow; that he, Daveth and Jon will continue to lead their respective regions as best as they can for as long as they can. Daenerys concedes that this is fair, but responds that they are in open rebellion since they declared themselves King in the North and Storm King and will consider them rebels against her rule. She ends the conversation when she receives a message from Varys. Dany orders Missandei to give Jon, Daveth, Castifer and their followers food and lodging. When Jon asks if they are prisoners, she says not yet ― causing Daveth to retort "We'll see soon enough." Before heading outside, Daveth asks Daenerys about Ser Barristan Selmy. He mentions he received reports of Barristan aiding Daenerys during her stay in Meereen after Daveth's death... and his fate. Daveth inquiries as to how Barristan died. When Daenerys relayed that Barristan fought like a true knight and Barristan was proud of his former squire, Daveth responds with a solemn "oh" before composing himself and leaving.[26]Castifer also stays behind for a while with Daveth, apologizing for his behavior citing that he's really stressed out because of the thought of preparing the North for going to war again right after they had one. He also says that he thinks Daenerys' dragons are very cool and that he suspects his half-brother, Jon may have a thing for her to which Daenerys and Daveth both rolled their eyes and Daenerys saying that such a thing was unlikely as it seems Jon already hates her to which Castifer repeats Daveth's earlier statement, "We'll see soon enough" leaving Daenerys and Daveth slightly puzzled. The duo leaves for their chambers. Sometime later, Daveth comes across Jon and Castifer and discusses with them about the oncoming Great War. He mentions to having already sent 5,000 soldiers to the North which Jon replied that he stationed them on The Wall with the Night's Watch and Wildlings while Castifer says that the Lords Robett Glover and Wyman Manderly have started to send more men to man the other castles.
Daveth, Castifer and Jon then notices a ship bearing the sigil of House Greyjoy landing on the beach, triggering flashbacks for Daveth from when the ironborn raided Lannisport and butchered his friends fifteen years ago. He immediately recognizes Theon Greyjoy; the two had not seen each other in six years since King Robert's visit to Winterfell. Despite Tyrion's attempt to explain the situation and Theon hesitantly greeting him, an angry Daveth Baratheon, Jon Snow and Castifer Stark grabs him by the throat saying they ought to kill Theon for betraying Robb Stark and Castifer Stark and for killing Bran and Rickon to which Theon confesses he didn't and that they were just some farm boys to which Castifer says that that doesn't make it any better; Daveth, Jon and Castifer calm themselves down and Daveth tells Theon that the only reason they won't kill him is because Theon helped save Sansa from the Boltons. When word arrives of the Unsullied's incomplete victory at Casterly Rock and the fall of Highgarden, Daveth witnesses an angry Daenerys Targaryen lashing out at Tyrion's failed plan. She turns to Jon and asks for his advice. Castifer was dumbfounded while Daveth, puzzled as to why she would ask a stranger for advice and already suspecting of the strong attraction building between Jon and Daenerys, politely interrupts to cover for Jon's slight confusion and escorts Daenerys to the Chamber of the Painted Table to examine the map. He effortlessly points out the strategic and tactical flaws of his uncle's plan, which makes Daenerys even angrier at Tyrion. However, Castifer then points out that this also presents an opportunity for the Dragon Queen: the combined armies led by Daveth's uncle Ser Jaime Lannister and Lord Randyll Tarly are exhausted from the long travel to Highgarden and their continuously failing campaign against the Stormlands and thus will take time to prepare for the journey back to King's Landing. Daveth then recommends using Daenerys's horde of Dothraki cavalry to outflank the weary Lannister/Tarly troops and utilize only one of her dragons to greatly lower their morale, arguing this will quickly bring Daenerys back into the fight and secure a major victory. When Dany asks how Daveth and Castifer knew of Jaime's strategy, they simply reply at the same time simultaneously "Because that's what I would have done." Jon finally composes himself with a red face and jumps in the conversation by telling Daenerys that all her followers saw her accomplish the impossible and believe she can do so yet again. However, using the dragons to destroy the castles and cities of Westeros would make her no different than the ones she is trying to overthrow.[27] Castifer then replies that he thinks that maybe he could travel to the Stormlands and with the Stormlanders' help, he could round up whatever forces and houses are left in the Riverlands which are still loyal to the Tullys and Starks and convince them to join their cause to which Daenerys gave him permission to leave.
A couple of days later, as Daveth and Jon overlook Blackwater Bay, he mentions that some of the surviving forces of the Reach have reportedly fled to the Stormlands and promises to protect them from their pursuers to which Jon replied that Castifer had sent a raven to him detailing the surviving river lords still loyal to the Tullys have joined their cause and that he is sailing back to Dragonstone while the rest march north. Daveth then asks Jon about the White Walkers wanting to know more about the northern threat. Jon replies by saying that the first wight they had ever encountered was in Castle Black which nearly killed him and the Lord Commander, after it was declared dead by Maester Aemon hours before it rose, Daveth replied that maybe it was a scout sent by the Night King, sizing up the defenses on the Wall and seeing how it is mostly manned by young boys and thieves, they'd probably think that most of the Seven Kingdoms have forgotten about them to which Jon replies by telling him how ignorant the lords and commoners are these days. Daveth then remarks that he will obviously be sending more troops from the Stormlands to march north to reinforce the Wall under the command of his lieutenant, Ser Robar Royce. With the statement, Jon replied that Lord Yohn Royce has declared for House Stark and that maybe the father and son should meet. Daveth says he would bring word of Robar's father to him. Daveth asks Jon about his Great Ranging Beyond the Wall, Jon says that most of the watchmen who were on the "Great" Ranging ended up dead, Daveth says that a red priestess who resurrected him says that a wildling town of a hundred thousand got massacred but that Jon managed to save a couple thousand to which Jon says that he did what he did and getting a brotherly tap from Daveth saying that he knew Jon would do stupid things just to do good and save people as always like his father, Eddard Stark. The duo share some brotherly laugh and banter before Jon says that everyone in their group of best friends were hailed as kings. Daveth asks Jon if Castifer was truly hailed as King in the North, to which Jon replied that he did but stepped down in favor of Jon. The duo shared more banter and laughter before Jon says what a coincidence that him, Daveth, Robb and Castifer were all hailed as kings and that maybe there really is a plan out there by some metaphysical entity. They share a quiet moment before they witness Daenerys return with Drogon landing in front of them. As the large dragon begins to approach, both Daveth and Jon stand their ground. Drogon allows Jon to touch him, to Dany's astonishment. Daveth looks at Jon and slightly narrows his eyes in suspicion. Daenerys informs them of her victory over the Lannisters, and asks them what their advisors Davos and Ariyana meant by "returning from the dead." While Jon avoids the topic of resurrection, Daveth says it is difficult to explain but quips resurrection sickness will render someone incapacitated for a very long time before getting interrupted by the arrival of Jorah Mormont, who had been cured of his greyscale. When Daenerys introduces him to Daveth and Jon, Daveth recognizes Jorah and what he did that caused him to flee in exile while Jon remarks that his late father Lord Commander Jeor Mormont was a great man.
Inside the castle, Daveth and Jon attend a meeting with Daenerys and her advisors. He is pleased when he learns Arya and Bran Stark are still alive and are at Winterfell after years of rumored to be dead. Jon states that he must go home to Winterfell and prepare to fight the army of the dead, and asks for Daveth's and Daenerys' help. Daveth intends to honor the alliance with the North and has already done so by sending a shock battalion to the Wall as Jon mentions, but Daenerys refuses to help as she believes that Queen Cersei will win if she abandons her cause to take the Iron Throne. Tyrion Lannister then presents an idea of bringing evidence of the army of the dead to Cersei, in the hopes of convincing her to join the fight against the White Walkers. Daveth states he will accompany Jon to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea to lead an expedition north of the Wall to capture a wight and bring it south to King's Landing once Castifer returns, with or without Daenerys's approval. At first, Daenerys doesn't agree with their departure but is convinced by Tyrion's confidence in them whilst Daveth notices an exchange of looks of between Jon and Daenerys. Varys arrives and delivers word from King's Landing: Queen Cersei has discovered "Kieran" is actually Daveth and is now aware of his existence. Daveth retorts that it was only a matter of time before she learned the truth, prompting Daenerys to remark that Daveth's knowledge of Cersei runs deep.
Arriving at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, Daveth and Jon lead a ranging party consisting of Castifer, Tormund, Jorah Mormont, Ariyana Dayne, Daveth's bastard half-brother Gendry, Sandor Clegane, Thoros, Lord Beric Dondarrion, a couple of Free Folk warriors and a Ranger from the Night's Watch along a combined military escort consisting of various men-at-arms and knights from the North, the Vale and the Stormlands on a mission beyond the Wall. While getting prepped up for the hunt, Daveth consults Jon on how to properly station and situate the forces that they have from the Riverlands and the Reach. Jon replies that the gathered riverlords should already be at Winterfell as Castifer had reported, a quarter of their forces were stationed north near the Wall and around Last Hearth and Karhold while the rest nearer to Winterfell. Daveth asks Jon for his opinion as to where the Reach lords' forces should be stationed with Jon saying that the lords of the North lost a lot of soldiers so the Reachmen could be stationed at the holdfasts and castles, more towards north nearer to the Wall but also obviously in Winterfell and the region's southern borders. Daveth congratulates Jon on his "astounding" plan to which Jon replied that Daveth was just bantering. Daveth then tells Jon that he wanted to legitimize him when he had been on the Iron Throne. Jon thanks Daveth and gives him a hug but Daveth retorts and says that he was sorry for not doing it due to all the stress of being a king which got in the way but Jon understands. They hug and Jon says that they could talk about it more if Daveth wants to after the hunt. They get the team ready and leave. The hunt succeeds but more than half of the party, including Thoros, the Free Folk guides, the Ranger and the entire military escort ended up being dead as they were attacked by hundreds of thousands of wights, prompting Daenerys to intervene with all three of her dragons and leading to the death of Viserion by the Night King, who later resurrects the beast for his own use. Despite this devastating loss, Jon continues to fight — prompting Daveth to jump off Drogon and orders Daenerys to take off to warn the others. They nearly drown in the cold water beneath the ice. Though they manage to pull themselves out, Daveth and Jon are nearly overwhelmed by the wights until a last-minute intervention by Jon's long-lost uncle Benjen Stark, who gives them his horse and stays behind to buy time for them to escape. While riding away on horseback, they watch Benjen being overwhelmed by the undead. Wounded and freezing from the cold, Daveth, Jon and Castifer makes it back to Eastwatch and is brought aboard the ship with Daenerys, Ariyana, Davos, and Sandor.
Sailing in the Narrow Sea, Daveth converses with Tyrion Lannister. Daveth mentions to his uncle he once heard stories of the White Walkers as a boy and didn't believe the Army of the Dead even truly existed until he saw them for the first time during the disastrous hunting party, but Tyrion comforts his nephew because they now know they are real. Contemplating, Tyrion asks Daveth if things would have turned out differently if he still sat on the Iron Throne, though Daveth honestly replies that he had already sought to put the Seven Kingdoms in the right direction and failed because of Cersei's schemes. He is tired of having to constantly look over his shoulder, and just wants all the backstabbing and scheming to stop. Now that he knows the existence of the Night King and the threat he poses to all life, Daveth vows to fight with every ounce of strength he has until the very end against the Night King. Tyrion respects Daveth's wishes, but warns him not to die again as it will undoubtedly cause Sansa more grief. Daveth understands and asks his uncle to send a message to Daenerys as he can't do it himself due to the late hours: he will bend the knee to Daenerys if she keeps her word of ending Westeros' game of thrones for good. Tyrion implores what the implications will mean for the Stormlanders loyal to him, though Daveth reassures his uncle that it will take time to explain everything but is confident they will come to understand that the lies, slander and propaganda hurled at Daenerys Targaryen are ill-founded and full of folly; that Daenerys is in fact a good person who proved herself worthy of his trust. Tyrion acknowledges Daveth's request and leaves to pass on the message, though Tyrion does warn his nephew that once they arrive at King's Landing to attend a summit to parley with the Lannisters, Daveth will have to do whatever it takes to secure an advantage; Daveth replies that he knows the game of thrones all too well, is very good at playing it and is highly certain that his mother doesn't want him harmed as he is her last child.[28]
At the Dragonpit, the various factions meet at the capital: Cersei Lannister, Jaime, Qyburn and Euron Greyjoy represent the Iron Throne. Daveth and Ariyana represent the Stormlands. Jon, Davos, Castifer and Brienne represent the North and Daenerys' court; while the Unsullied and the Dothraki amass outside the city walls to attack in case the truce gets broken. When Cersei arrives, the mother and son stare into each other's eyes for a moment – a long moment, to which Daveth could clearly see and tell the relief in her eyes, knowing that somehow, the gods still hadn't taken away all her children, that they'd spare her of such a fate – before quickly growing impatient that Daenerys has not come - only for Daenerys herself to make a dramatic arrival on Drogon's back moments later. Tyrion opens the negotiations but is quickly interrupted by Euron who gloatingly postures, threatening to kill Yara unless Theon yields to him and deriding Tyrion's dwarfism; when Tyrion and Theon retort to his taunts with their own, Daveth remarks he would have killed Euron and put the Iron Islands to the torch a long time ago. A furious Jaime orders Euron to sit down, and when he disregards the warning, Cersei reiterates it; a subdued Euron returns to his seat.
Getting the meeting back on track, Tyrion, Daenerys, Daveth, Castifer and Jon try to warn Cersei of the greater threat coming for them all, but she dismisses it as a ploy to trick her into lowering her defenses. To prove their claims, Sandor returns with the crate containing the wight, which is worryingly silent. Sandor gets the crate open, but there is still no movement. He finally gives the crate a massive kick, which prompts the enraged wight to launch itself out and charge toward the nearest target - Cersei, appropriately enough. Visibly horrified, the Lannister queen and her allies recoil in horror as Sandor pulls the wight back on a chain with the help of Castifer and Daveth, its claws inches from Cersei's face, and manages to slice the creature in half when it turns to attack Sandor. The assembled look on in shock as the wight's upper half still moves around. Castifer steps forward and picks up the wight's discarded hand and gives it to Jon who, using a torch provided by Davos to demonstrate how fire can be used to stop them. He then uses a dragonglass dagger, given by Daveth, to the heart to end the wight's upper half, bluntly stating that if they don't win the coming war, such a fate awaits every person in Westeros. A horror-struck Jaime asks how many wights are coming, and Daenerys tells him the army of the dead numbers at least 100,000. Euron asks if the wights can swim. When Jon responds, "No," Euron announces to Cersei his intention to withdraw the Iron Fleet back to the Iron Isles. He declares that he has been over the whole world and has never been terrified until now. On his way out, Euron tells Daenerys to retreat to her island while he returns to his own, and to come find him when they are the only two left alive. Daveth glances at Euron as the King of the Iron Islands leaves, suspecting duplicity.
Seemingly convinced, Cersei immediately offers terms: satisfied that Daenerys is concerned with the Army of the Dead, Cersei will not withdraw her troops, but will guarantee that they will not hinder the Targaryen, Baratheon or Northern forces and the respective Riverlands or Reach armies in any way during the battle against the White Walkers. She refuses to deal with Daenerys at all, however, and calls on Jon Snow, as King in the North and Ned Stark's son, as well as to Daveth Baratheon, her last surviving son and the former King of the Seven Kingdoms, to keep the truce and to stay out of any future conflict along with the regions who bent their knees to them, between Cersei and Daenerys. Daveth lies and falsely agrees to Cersei's terms (easily managing to avoid giving away his true intentions), but Jon, however, says that he cannot serve two queens - and reveals to all assembled that he has already declared for Daenerys, infuriating all three Lannisters present. Declaring that there will be no truce if it is just her and Daenerys, Cersei storms out of the summit, content to let the Starks, Baratheons and Targaryens battle the undead alone and then deal with whoever emerges victorious from that conflict.
Meanwhile, Daenerys, Daveth (to his dismay) and Tyrion (who never knew about Jon's change of heart in the first place) all rebuke Jon over his ill-advised action, suggesting that not being able to make a small lie in order to secure them a political and military advantage might have cost them greatly. Daveth leaves to meet with his mother alone, despite Daenerys's protests that she will have him murdered - or else they will be right back where they started. He tells Tyrion he can meet Cersei when he returns.
Daveth is accompanied by Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane into the Tower of the Hand; he meets his uncle Jaime outside, who claims he tried to reason with Cersei until she threw him out. For the first time in three years, Daveth finally confronts Cersei face-to-face. Cersei accuses her son of treason while Daveth calls her out on everything she did and accuses her filicide. He holds her accountable for the chain of events that has happened after he died, though he is hurt when Cersei wrongly blames Daveth for the deaths of her other children, as she believed no one would have touched Tommen or Myrcella while Daveth was still alive and says Daveth had always wanted Joffrey dead. Finally losing control of himself, Daveth roars that he knew from the very beginning that Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen were bastards born of incest and always felt the urge to kill Joffrey but refrained from doing so for Cersei's sake because she gave birth to them all. Daveth tells Cersei that regardless of the truth he always loved Myrcella and Tommen just as much as Cersei does and was heartbroken when he learned of their deaths, but Cersei doesn't care. Angered, Daveth calls Cersei a power-mad narcissist to her face and calls her bluff, daring her to kill him again by having Gregor carry out the sentence... if she has the stomach for it. A tense moment passes in but Cersei refuses to do it. Seeing his mother for who she really is, Daveth turns to leave while Cersei calls out to him, reminding him that he is her son. Daveth casts a cold glare at Cersei, saying "You have no son. You killed him many years ago." He leaves and passes by Tyrion who goes to speak to Cersei next.
All three Lannisters then return to the Dragonpit. Cersei has agreed to the truce and work with Daenerys, but not by keeping her troops back: the Lannister army will march north to fight alongside the Starks, Baratheons and Targaryens.
In the Chamber of the Painted Table at Dragonstone, Daenerys and her court discuss logistics and their journey to the North. It will take the Dothraki a fortnight to reach Winterfell, and the plan is to have Jon and the Unsullied cross the sea by ship and meet them at White Harbor. Jorah Mormont points out that the North is not really safer for her than anywhere else, as someone with a memory of Robert's Rebellion and an idea of becoming a hero could easily take her out with a single crossbow bolt. He suggests she fly to Winterfell to avoid any potential unpleasantness. Jon counters that Daenerys ride with them so that the North can see her as a liberator and ally. After a moment's consideration, Dany decides to sail north with Jon. Jorah, suspecting a different reason for her decision, throws her a look, which she notices but avoids. Daveth tells Daenerys that he will have his bannermen begin the march north and have his ships carry siege weapons and supplies to assist the war effort. When Dany asks about the Stormlands, Daveth replies that everyone knows what's at stake and will happen if they fail. He also adds there have been some grumbling about him bending the knee to Daenerys, but things have at least settled for the moment. Daenerys is reassured by that and promises to name Daveth the new Warden of the South when the Night King is defeated. Daveth tells her to focus on the approaching war, but also warns Daenerys that Cersei may be plotting of betraying them instead of helping them against the White Walkers and that she will attack whoever wins regardless. Daenerys says that if Cersei does, they will be ready.
Daveth, Jon, Castifer, Tyrion and Daenerys board a ship that will take them to White Harbor. On the voyage, both Daveth and Tyrion witness Daenerys allowing Jon into her cabin, where the two of them give in to their mutual attraction and engage in a sexual encounter. Shaking his head in disapproval, Daveth turns around and walks away with Tyrion in tow.[29]
Season 8
Daveth is seen arriving at Winterfell with all of his assembled troops from the Stormlands to prepare for battle against the Night King's forces, escorting by Daenerys, Jon Snow and the Unsullied. He is one of the first to recognize Sansa's chilly courtesy to the Dragon Queen, though is alarmed when Bran Stark announces the Wall has been breached and the Army of the Dead is currently marching south. Although Daveth and his troops were able to bring in additional food and other supplies from the Reach, he is understandably visibly annoyed when there apparently isn't enough to keep the allied armies fed and points this out to Daenerys.
Daveth still refuses to believe his uncle that Cersei's armies intend to march north to aid the living, suspecting his mother of intentionally holding her troops back before attacking whoever wins.[30]
After Jaime Lannister arrives at Winterfell, Daveth is present at his uncle's trial in the Great Hall and is mostly silent, mostly listening to Sansa and Daenerys berate him. Although clearly not surprised when Jaime reveals that Cersei lied and never had any intention of sending her army north, Daveth intervenes with Brienne to defend his uncle when they question his loyalty to their cause - candidly reminding everyone present in the hearing that they need all the help they can get if the living is to ever stand a chance against the Army of the Dead, that beggars cannot afford to be choosers at this crucial point. Later in a private meeting with Sansa, both remark it was the first time since their reunion that they both had argued with one another - though Daveth refuses to apologize for vouching for Jaime, but does state he understands how she feels about the Kingslayer's presence in the North. They make up, embrace and share a kiss before Daveth leaves to oversee the final preparations and assumes command of the right flank when the battle begins. He then rides into battle with his troops upon hearing three horn blasts, signalling the arrival of the White Walkers.[31]
When the Battle of Ice and Fire commences at nightfall, Daveth fights on the front lines with his Stormland and Reach troops - accompanied by Lucius Blackmyre, Gendry, Sandor Clegane, Eddison Tollett and Samwell Tarly. He is visibly amazed at the sight of Melisandre setting fire to the Dothraki's blades, but when he notices the horde's cavalry disappearing into the dark, Daveth indicates the charge has failed and were overwhelmed by the wights and quickly orders his men to immediately assume defensive formations.
During the battle, Daveth helps fend off numerous wights as the massive undead army surges forth colliding with the living armies at Winterfell. When the Night King conjures a blizzard, Daveth finds himself in a vicious struggle against the sheer number of wights and is eventually forced to retreat with many defenders into Winterfell. Noticing the effort to ignite the heavy wooden spikes were failing, Daveth assists a number of Unsullied in diverting as many wights away from Stark archers but are still at a serious disadvantage due to the extreme cold and winds - limiting their sense of sight in the fierce blizzard. With Melisandre and Vaeraleah's aid, the trenches burst into flame around the fortified stronghold and Daveth helps guide his men behind the gates. Any sense of reprieve, however, was quickly doused when individual wights started piling up on top of each other to douse the flames, allowing the rest to cross.
Now locked in a bitter fight for survival, Daveth is nearly surrounded by many wights and is stabbed twice before repelling them with Stormbringer before being saved by Lucius, Brienne and his uncle Jaime. Bleeding from his stab wounds and growing increasingly exhausted, Daveth is momentarily worried for Sansa's and Tyrion's safety in the crypts before reengaging the horde of the dead in combat. In the struggle against Winterfell's fallen defenders moments after being raised as wights, Lucius is stabbed multiple times by various wights protecting Daveth. Moments after Arya Stark kills the Night King, Lucius falls to the ground and stares into the eyes of his former King, proud of having finally found someone worthy of his service before dying. Daveth bellows out a loud cry of anguish, grieving over the loss of his former Kingsguard and second-in-command.[32]
Daveth is present when the bodies of those who died during the Battle of Ice and Fire are set to be cremated. After Jon delivers the eulogy, he is handed a torch and goes to burn the pyre where Lucius was laid before comforting a tearful Sansa, mourning Theon Greyjoy's body. Despite his personal grudge against the ironborn, Daveth privately admits that Theon had finally redeemed himself for all the wrongs he committed and had died a hero.
In the subsequent celebration, Daveth witnesses Daenerys legitimizing his bastard half-brother Gendry as "Gendry Baratheon", son of Robert. Although proud, Daveth easily recognized the act as a political maneuver on Daenerys's part by making Gendry dependent on her favor - a move Daveth despondently does not approve of. He does however notice the mood in the great hall change when a drunken Tormund praising Jon and going over their history: he made friends with an enemy (Tormund himself), got himself killed for it but didn't stay dead (which everyone seems to laugh off as just drunken boasting), and that he keeps fighting, climbed on a dragon and brazenly asks whether a madman or a king does all of the above. Daveth finds this amusing and sees Daenerys getting up and leaving.
The next day, Daveth attends a war council with Daenerys, Jon and the remaining leaders around a large map of Westeros regarding Daenerys resuming her conquest. While Daenerys asserts that King's Landing must be taken as soon as possible, Sansa counters that their men are exhausted from fighting the White Walkers and need time to recuperate if they are to ever fight at full strength, to which Daveth and Arya both silently agree though Jon reaffirms his loyalty to Daenerys's cause and states that the North will march to King's Landing. This begins to cause Daveth to develop doubts about Daenerys.
Some time after the meeting adjourns, Daveth confronts Jon and is told the truth of his parentage: he was never a bastard, that "Jon Snow" is not his real name nor was the late Lord Eddard Stark his father. He reveals that he is in fact the son of Daenerys's older brother Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark and his true name is actually Aegon Targaryen. Realizing this makes Jon the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, Daveth dismisses his pleas - stating "no truth is ever kept secret for long. In the end, it all comes out one way or another." Before marching down south with the remnants of his army for the final battle, Daveth communicates his findings to Varys—who was later subsequently executed by Daenerys for treason.[33][34]
Daveth rallies the remaining Stormland and Reach armies along the Kingsroad to King's Landing while the surviving Stark, Arryn, Dothraki and Unsullied forces arrive ahead of him. However, he witnesses his mother ordering Ser Gregor Clegane execute Missandei. During the Battle of King's Landing, the Golden Company is caught off-guard by Drogon and as a result, is decimated by the charging Northern, Stormland and Targaryen forces. The surviving Lannister forces surrender but Daenerys refuses to accept. As Jon tries in vain to hold his armies back, Daveth was outraged at the sacking and devastation of his birthplace. When the wildfire caches stored below the city years ago by Aerys II Targaryen start erupting due to Drogon's dragonfire, Daveth withdraws his armies to avoid the blast.[34]

Daveth was a stoic, dutiful, charismatic, highly intelligent, efficient and cunning strategist. Courteous but firm, he was resolute but not unyielding to argument. As expected of Baratheon men, Daveth possessed a keen talent for warfare and military tactics as his own father, King Robert Baratheon. He even inherited his father's incredible strength in combat. A true protégé of his grandfather Tywin Lannister, he is shown to possess an extreme level of intellect and cunning, a trait that allowed him to outmaneuver his political rivals such as Petyr Baelish and his own mother Cersei Lannister with relative ease. In addition, Daveth Baratheon received formal combat training at a young age by Ser Barristan Selmy and his uncle Jaime Lannister and grew to be a highly skilled swordsman and warrior in his own right. Though a loyal, dutiful and respectful son, Daveth is determined to be a different king and vowed to forge a new path for Westeros.
Daveth differs from his father Robert and half-brother Joffrey Baratheon – beyond physical appearance, but also his character and temperament. Whereas Joffrey was an arrogant, sadistic fop with a massive sense of entitlement, Daveth was rather popular with lords and commoners alike. Unlike his father Robert, Daveth was a diligent, decisive and brilliant peacetime ruler who often listened to the sound advice the council gave him. He showed a great deal of self-restraint in terms of his emotions, and didn’t have any of his father’s negative qualities of self-indulgence (in food, drink, and women). Another glaring difference between him and his father is that Daveth only fights when it is required of him, whereas Robert Baratheon absolutely lived for fighting. Unlike his mother Cersei, Daveth is patient, perceptive, and capable of carefully thinking and planning long-term strategies to get the results he wants whilst avoiding any unnecessary repercussions. His plans were swift, realistic and achievable, even when generous. While not trusting even his own parents, Daveth is more diplomatic than Cersei or Joffrey and recognizes it as a necessity to arrange alliances in order to keep the support of the noble houses. Following his first death, however, Cersei and Joffrey spurned the Starks and re-ignited their rivalry, starting a war that severely damaged both alliances and undid Daveth's careful work. However, while he inspires loyalty in those who followed him and treated them with generosity, when pushed too far, Daveth can be quite ruthless depending on the circumstances; he often reprimands Joffrey due to his sadistic nature and incompetence whenever he stepped out of line, threatened swift retaliation against those who defied him, and imposed harsh punishments such as executing arrogant retainers seeking to seize power for themselves or exiling retainers to Castle Black who—willing or unwilling—acted against his wishes.
Of his three siblings, Daveth has no regard for his brother Joffrey, knowing fully well that he is incompetent and would be terrible at ruling the Seven Kingdoms than Aerys II Targaryen. Like his maternal grandfather, he has no qualms with putting Joffrey in his place when necessary, normally being cold and blunt with the boy and exerting authority over him when need be. On the other hand, Daveth cares deeply about Myrcella and Tommen, and vice-versa, having helped raise them himself and played with them when they were children. He even contemplated signing a degree naming either Myrcella or Tommen as his heir instead of Joffrey if he were to die with no children. Although Daveth became aware that all of his siblings were bastards born of incest and had no claim to the Iron Throne by Season 2, he still thought of Myrcella and Tommen as his own. When Daveth met his bastard half-brother Gendry, both men traded playful banter and expressed their interest in getting to know one another.
Ever since his subsequent resurrection, Daveth loathed anything relating to the Lannisters: their role in orchestrating the death of his father King Robert, the Lannister blood in his veins, and his mother Cersei. Daveth becomes more reflective of his past actions and many of Jon Arryn's lessons begin to resonate with him, leading him to become more prudent and a wiser tactician though he still retains portions of his former self. However, Daveth is still fully willing to fight when the need arises.
Daveth’s relationship with House Stark brought out the compassionate side of him. He is childhood friends with Robb Stark and readily agreed to help Jon Snow, citing their friendship and his father and Jon's (adoptive) father were best friends as well. He initially perceived his wife Sansa Stark to be a naive young maiden to a fault and a slow learner when their marriage was arranged by their fathers. But the more he spent with Sansa as he tutored her about court intrigue at King's Landing, Daveth slowly fell in love with her. He often took the time out of his busy schedule to spend time with her whenever he could and comforted her in times of hardship. Any gentleness or caring feelings he has for Sansa are usually reserved for her. It is known that Daveth had one of the healthiest relationships with his spouse than most of the Baratheons - he never yelled at her, never physically abused her, never took any mistresses or fathered several bastards, as Robert the Usurper did.
Relationships with Other Characters
Jon Arryn was Lord of the Eyrie, Lord Paramount of the Vale, Warden of the East and first Hand of the King to Daveth's father Robert Baratheon. During his tenure as Hand, Jon was one of Daveth's mentors and educated him on what it means to govern. According to Grand Maester Pycelle, the two were suggested to be very close; Daveth fondly thought of Jon as a surrogate grandfather and Jon―who at the time had no children of his own before the birth of his son―in turn thought of Daveth as a surrogate grandson.
Ser Barristan Selmy was a knight of the Kingsguard for almost 40 years and is arguably considered by many to be one of the best swordsmen and most honorable men in the entire Seven Kingdoms. Barristan searched for and rescued Daveth from the ironborn during the Greyjoy Rebellion, an act in which Daveth felt grateful, indebted to Barristan and became his squire before eventually being knighted himself.
Sansa Stark is the second child and eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell and Lady Catelyn Tully of Riverrun. She became Daveth's wife through an arranged marriage to cement the Baratheon-Stark alliance.

In the books
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Daveth is 14 years old when the story begins. He is described as a handsome young man, with black hair and blue eyes of the Baratheons, and is known for his calm and calculating demeanor even as a child. His maternal uncle Tyrion Lannister mentions that unlike his bastard half-brother Joffrey, Daveth is a popular leader and a talented warrior, rumored to be considered one of the most skilled knights in all of Westeros. He and his father have a distant relationship, but his mother noticeably dotes upon Joffrey more than he does. However, Daveth is fully aware of Joffrey's cruelty and sadistic nature, believing him to be a monster worse than the Mad King. Later books showed how Daveth protected Tommen from Joffrey's terror and harshly beat Joffrey whenever he stepped out of line, giving him a black eye and knocking out three of his baby teeth in the progress.
Daveth is not a POV character in the novels, thus his actions are witnessed and interpreted through the eyes of POV characters, mainly his mother Cersei and Sansa. Stories depicting Daveth as a child are told in the POV chapters via the memories of Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei, and Barristan.
In The Winds of Winter, Daveth is shown to be deeply bitter and resentful since his resurrection and is given the alias of "Kieran Storm". He was besieged by the Golden Company and forced to flee from the Stormlands into the Riverlands, where he fought various mercenaries during his retreat. Reports suggest Daveth was last seen heading north to the Vale alone.
According to the TV series official pronunciation guide developed for the cast and crew, "Daveth" is pronounced "DAH-veth" (i.e. between "Dahvah-th" and "Dav-e-th").
